Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Students should acquire theoretical and practical knowledge on fundamental themes and concepts of framing and supporting the analysis of demographic and social data and its relationship with spatial planning and the elaboration of public policies.
Syllabus:
I - Object of study and fundamental components:
1. Demography vs Sociodemography.
2. The main sources of information.
3. The representation of population numbers and demographic events in the Lexis Diagram.
4. Demographic structures.
5. The intensity and timing of demographic phenomena.
6. The impact of structures and the level, intensity and timing of demographic phenomena on the number of demographic events.
7. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of demographic phenomena.
8. The effects of age, generation and period on the analysis of demographic phenomena.
9. Demographic transition and epidemiological transition.
10. The current demographic challenges.
11. Population policies and their outcomes.
II - Demography and Territorial Planning
1. The main dynamics of the Portuguese population: historical perspective.

Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The syllabus, resulting from the learning objectives of the curricular unit, provide the graduates with fundamental knowledge to be applied, in an urbanistic dimension that takes into account the ecological and sustainability issues, to the territory management: at the theoretical and conceptual, methodological and analytical level. (I) at the present and prospective descriptive level with technical application to plenary models and public policies (II).
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Expository and demonstrative, analytical and continuous.
Evaluation system:
(i) Work corresponding to 40 percent of the classification.
Evaluation based on the work of collecting, processing and interpreting sociodemographic data - at the national, regional and municipal scales - while supporting the learning of the construction of territorial planning documents. The work is carried out, objectively, for each session and, therefore, it is realized by the written, verifiable answer to the class questions to be deposited, individually, on the course unit platform.
(ii) Test corresponding to 60 percent of the classification.
Assessment of knowledge composed by theoretical-practical test to focus on all contents taught.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The course incorporates a number of important data analysis, allowing its application in matters related to planning and urbanism on the assumption of theoretical and practical knowledge that a balanced and rational distribution of people and buildings by territory constitutes a reference for learning and application. In addition to the theoretical and conceptual devices, curriculum unit, dedicated to the analysis, use of standardized methodologies and appropriate statistical treatment programs, especially Excel and SPSS.
