Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Hospital Dental Medicine is an evolving specialty of Dental Medicine, based on the inclusive synergy of all areas of Dental Medicine and adds the component of the hospital and emergency environment. Clinical condition diversity among patients, and the multiplicity of their treatment needs, characterize patients in a hospital environment. Hence, the dentist may be asked to provide dental care for patients with cancer, with medical complications, special needs, rehabilitation of total and partial mandibular resections, dental trauma, and emergencies. Hospital Dental Medicine can also significantly benefit the growing geriatric community, which often requires more frequent and complex medical and dental care, and the future dentist may have a role in preventing medical complications secondary to the necessary medical dental procedures.
Syllabus:
Concepts of outpatient, permanent care, primary care, palliative care. Urgent and emergency medical care. Septic or infectious clinical conditions of dental origin. Anesthesia and conscious sedation. Dental care of vulnerable patients under general anesthesia. Oral surgery in the operating room. Traumatology and Hospital Dental Medicine. Oral complications and complex oral rehabilitation after oral cavity oncology surgery. Oral health care needs in inpatients or outpatients. Dental approach to medically compromised patients. Approach to patients with special oral health care needs.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Theoretical lessons (; 15h, one hour/week): In the theoretical classes, those themes will be addressed, and clinical cases will be presented for learning by the student about the procedures performed by a dentist in the daily clinical dynamics of a hospital environment. Besides, this knowledge will promote the future dentist to galvanize prevention along with treatment. The different contexts of the patient will also be addressed to adapt clinical practices to their specific needs.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The evaluation of this curricular unit (2ECTS) results from the weighing of 100% by a written test. The minimum approval rating in the UC is 10 values, otherwise, the student must perform the CU exam, according to the UFP schedule. Students have orientation and tutorial orientation, scheduled by the teacher of the CU, by Canvas platform, during all the semester. The regime of assistance to classes is the adopted one in the Academic Norms of UFP and other national norms in force. To obtain the accreditation of this course, the student will have to guarantee the achievement of the 2 ECTS provided for in the described evaluation system.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
This unit correlates theoretical and clinical concepts of dentstry with other medical specialties regarding the standard good clinical practice and the organization of dental services within local health units or hospitals (public or private). Theoretical lessons (15h; one hour/week): have the objective of explaning and updating the concepts describe in the curricular program of the discipline that together with a proper reading of the literature aim to develop cientific and professional abilities. Tutorial guidance (7,5h) aims to allow students to correctly understand the literature as well as to develop methods of research, improve their written and oral expositions and improve the analytic and systematic review of the knowledge obtained. Other sessions allow students to contact with dental medicine units within hospital setting by visiting the dental clinic of the HE-UFP and the CACE-HE-UFP.
