Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit: | |||
Identify the main moments of evolution of Public Health and integrate the concept of Primary Health Care. Identify and recognize caries and erosion pathology as pathological, epidemiological and clinical entities. Recognize the process of demineralization and remineralization of hard dental tissues. Acquire skills particularly regarding current evidence on etiology, risk factors and indicators, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, modeling factors that involve the host and biofilm in the main disorders of hard dental tissues. Acquire knowledge regarding lesion detection and epidemiology of hard tissue disorders. Identify the major chemical and mechanical control mechanisms of oral biofilms and their relationship to oral health. Knowledge of preventive and therapeutic methods and techniques to contain caries and erosion lesions. Acquire basic concepts of hygiene, biosecurity and infection control in Dentistry. | |||

Introduction to Public Health. Evolution of the main disease prevention measures. Concepts on the development of oral and dental structures. Characteristics and composition of saliva. Biochemical events in the biofilm related to caries and other hard dental tissue disorders. Etiology, pathogenesis and modifying factors of caries and dental erosion. Dynamic process of dental demineralization and remineralization. Host susceptibility and response to hard dental tissue disorders. Interference of diet and nutrition. Strategies and preventive methods of the main oral diseases: antimicrobial and remineralizing agents. Chemical and mechanical control of oral biofilms. Fissure sealants. Epidemiology of dental hard tissue disorders and epidemiological diagnosis. Early childhood caries. Fundamental principles of the assessment and detection of the risk of dental caries. Hygiene, biosafety and infection control in dentistry. | |||

Susceptibility and host response.Clinical diagnosis and epidemiology of dental caries.Unit II-Theoretical-practical and Tutorial (3 ECTS):Evolution of the main disease prevention measures and historical landmarks of public health.Intervention in Oral Public Health and Medicine Preventive and Community Dentistry.Antibacterial and remineralizing agents in the prevention of hard tissue disorders.Pit and fissure sealants: evidence and application protocols.Characteristics and therapeutic indications of toothpastes.Oral hygiene instruments and tooth brushing techniques.Biological risk and principles of limitation and propagation of microorganisms in the dental office environment. | |||
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation): | |||
The course will be divided the components Theoretical 15h, Theoretical-practical 30h, Tutorial Orientation 7,5h and Other 7,5h. At the end of semester, a written test will be held with the Theoretical (40%) and Theoretical-practical (60%) contents. The approval of this Curricular Unit corresponds to 5 ECTS, with mandatory minimum grade of 9.5V. Skills to reach the unit of Cariology correspond to 2 ECTS and unit of Hygiene and Primary Care: 3 ECTS. Failure to obtain a minimum grade of 9.5 V in the written test sends the student to the end of semester exam on a date to be fixed in the academic schedule. The assistance scheme for classes is adopted at the University Pedagogical Regulation in force. | |||
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes: | |||
Theoretical classes (T, 15 hours, one hour per week) are intended to expose and update, descriptive and organizational form, the concepts, theories and assumptions based on the syllabus which, supported by a bibliography. These classes aim to develop scientific skills in the field of cariology, particularly in the pathologies of hard dental tissues, and in the future it intended to develop professional skills in students;Theoretical-practical classes (TP; 30 hours; 2 hours per week) aim to develop, by expository and illustrative method, a set of knowledge, framed with practical activities that allow the identification of the different devices and compounds available for the control of oral hygiene, as well as, enable the student to make the most appropriate decision on their clinical prescription. Enable students to understand and perform basic procedures within the scope of preventive dentistry.The tutorial Orientation classes (OT; 7.5 hours) consist of guidance for pupils sessions, to enable them to properly use bibliographies, develop methods of scientific research topics described in the program of this course, promoting scientific reading, building critical capacity and contact with scientific nomenclature, as well as the motivation for preparing scientific presentations according to the review methodology. Other classes (O; 7.5 hours) are free sessions designed to enable the student to clarify scientific methodologies presentation of research results that performs as part of this curricular unit. | |||
