Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit: | |||
Dentistry I aims to review of concepts about the main diseases affecting the dental hard tissues, by demineralization process, by environmental factor, genetic conditions or risk factors associated with individuals. It also aims to describe and illustrate the principles of identification and response of the dentin-pulp complex, by distinction between signs and symptoms of dental hard structures, especially located in clinical or anatomical crown. Theoretical-practice teaching is intended to illustrate, exemplify and describe the main medical devices used for examination of the dental hard tissues injuries, for used in the surgical procedures (cutting enamel and dentin) and also to describe the main underlying concepts of operative dentistry as the cavity design and general principles of cavity preparation. Laboratory practice component is intended to demonstrate and develop skills in operative techniques based on the general principles of dental cavity preparations. | |||

General considerations about Dentistry History and concepts; Fundamental principles of cavity preparation; Medical Devices: Instrumental and turbine; Isolation of the operatory field; ICDAS; DMFT; Mechanical-chemical lesions of the teeth; Tooth wear; BEWE; Dentin and pulp complex; Tooth disorders and alterations on tooth development; Cavity preparations technique for amalgam and resin-based composite. | |||
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives: | |||
Theoretical classes (T: One hour per week): General considerations; Dentistry fundamentals; Dental caries diagnosis;ICDAS; Physical, chemical-mechanical tooth wear; BEWE; Dentin-pulp complex; Tooth development injuries. Theoretical-practical (TP: 1 hour per week) + Tutorial (7.5 hours) + Other (7.5 hours) classes: Nomenclature and classification of cavities; General principles of cavity preparation; Medical devices: Instrumental and staff. Rubber dam and isolation of operatory field. Laboratory Practice (PL: Two hours per week): techniques of cavity preparation for amalgam and composite resins: Class I, II, III, IV, V, VI according to Black principles. | |||
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation): | |||
The total distribution allocated credits is 5 ECTS. The evaluation results from weighting: 50% theoretical (T) typology), 20% theoretical-practical (TP) and 30% laboratory practice (LP) typologies. The assessment system comprises one written test in theoretical; one written test in theoretical-practice and two practical tests in laboratory practice, by executing cavities preparation in Frasaco teeth. Failure to obtain a minimum grade of 10 values in the theoretical and in theoretical-practice typologies refers the student to written exam according to academic schedule. A minimum grade of 10 values is necessary to assessment the T, the TP and the LP typologies. The assistance scheme for classes is adopted at the University Pedagogical Regulations in force. For the accreditation of this Unit the student will have to ensure the achievement of 5 ECTS provided in the evaluation system described. | |||
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes: | |||
Dentistry I theme aims to provide the student's knowledge which enable means to the dental caries diagnosis and diagnosis of other diseases affecting the tooth hard tissues such as, chemical-mechanical conditions, of non-bacterial origin, that promote enamel and dentin wear, tooth developmental anomalies (shape, number, size) and hereditary or acquired anomalies that promote structural changes in the enamel and in dentin. It also aims to describe the dentin-pulp complex, as part of the dental crown, affected in signs and symptoms, as consequences of dental hard tissues disorders. In theoretical (T) typology predominantly are used the expository and participatory methods. In theoretical-practical (TP) classes dominates the exhibition, illustrative and participatory approach as the main description of general principles of cavity preparation, of medical devices as rotary cutting instruments (turbine) and instruments used in the diagnosing of dental crown injuries, and operatory field isolation techniques, in order to provide students competences for of use of instruments and operative techniques. In laboratory practical (LP) classes predominate demonstrative methods as the surgical technique of cavity preparations and design to enable the student to develop technical skills on cavity design and preparation in accordance with fundamental principles of Black. In laboratory practice component, the student should develop technical skills to perform cavity preparations of class I, II, III, IV, V and VI in Frasaco teeth, using rotary hand pieces and manual instruments for training and handedness analysis.Tutorials orientation (OT; 8 hours) consist of student guiding sessions to allow them to properly use bibliographies; develop methods of scientific research; organize readings; deepen analytical skills, synthesis and systematization of knowledge as part of the dentistry I syllabus. Other (O; 8 hours) sessions allow the student to identify and to properly use of medical devices (turbines, instruments) and teaching resources with practical applicability in the context of the course. | |||
