Learning Period:Language of Instruction:Total Hours:
Spring SemesterPortuguese/English65
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The basic science of medical school and other disciplines of dentistry closely related to endodontics , as well as the knowledge of the pulp cavity allow learning of endodontic principles and currently known therapeutic techniques .
The nonsurgical endodontic treatment is the basis of Endodontics and is intended for the removal of the dental pulp and the subsequent filling of the space it occupies .
Guidelines of execution of access cavities in multi-root canal teeth.
Access cavity errors - identification, prognosis and prevention.
Instrumentation errors - identification, prognosis and prevention.
Filling errors - identification, prognosis and prevention.
Manual Irrigation in Endodontics: material, irrigating solutions and clinical protocols
Pulp and periradicular pathology: diagnostic tests.
Pulp pathology: characterization of the etiology and clinical manifestations.
Periradicular pathology: characterization of the etiology and clinical manifestations.
Discussion of Clinical Cases.
Review of the clinical protocol for non-surgical endodontic treatment.
End of consultation of endodontic treatment session.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The Endodontics II aims to provide the student the knowledge and ability on how to address and correct execution of nonsurgical endodontic treatment in pluriradicular teeth. For such, in theoretical classes are explained the physiology of the pulpo-dentinal complex that allows the realization of a correct diagnosis, as well as addressing issues of the clinical protocol. In this UC, the practical component allows contact with the different groups of teeth and their own anatomical characteristics, encouraging the execution of the respective non-surgical endodontic treatment.
Research and selection of appropriate scientific literature within the topics described in the program of this course is oriented, thus fostering scientific reading, the development of critical skills and contact with scientific nomenclature, and the motivation for the development of research and scientific presentations within the endodontics.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Theoretical teaching (T), weighting of 60%, complemented by laboratory practice (PL) weighting of 40% and supported by tutorial teaching (OT) and others (O), additional tasks.
The theoretical component evaluation is continuous: 1 written knowledge assessment test.
The evaluation of the practical-laboratory component is continuous and takes into account: attendance, punctuality and attitude of the student and the execution of pre-clinical work: quality of radiographs, acquisition of necessary material, weekly reports, mini-tests, access cavities in molar teeth and complete non-surgical endodontic treatments.
The minimum classification for validation of each component, on a quantitative scale of 0-20 points, will be 9.5 points.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The lectures emphasize the expository and participatory methods, with a view to the sciences interrelated with endodontics. The focus is on literature on the timeliness of the content displayed on the unit's program. In practical classes predominates demonstrative method and practice by students, for the execution of endodontic treatment.
