Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
This course aims to enable students to acquire skills that will enable them to:
1. Be able to solve problems on their own social hygiene and public health;
2. Establishing a correlation between acquired knowledge and behaviors of health and illness of populations;
3. Linking knowledge with other disciplines to implement preventive and curative practices at individual and collective level;
4. Intervene effectively in primary care network;
5. Understand the importance of environmental, socio-economic and occupational factors in the prevention and treatment of disease.
Syllabus:
Unit I.
History of Public Health. Definition and functions of Public Health. Health staff and community. Primary and Secondary Care network. Healthcare System in Portugal and Europe. Declaration of "Alma-Ata". Public Health and Epidemiology. Health Indicators.
Unit II.
Hygiene. Environmental Health. Wholesomeness. Health and Safety.
Unit III.
The role of the pharmacist in the prevention and promotion of Health Education for Health. Programs and protocols for performance in chronic diseases in Community Pharmacy.
Unit IV.
Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases. Intervention in infectious diseases: prevention and treatment. Vaccination: National immunization programs and vaccines not included in the national vaccination program.
Unit V.
Concepts of health and disease. Concepts of epidemiology. Epidemiological indicators. Epidemiological studies.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The pharmacist is a health professional whose function is acting within the Social Hygiene and Public Health . They need basic concepts of epidemiology and infecciology to support its operations .
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Lectures and theoretical and practical. The evaluation will be of continuous nature , using written tests .
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Besides the exhibition of current and relevant concepts ( theoretical ) is required for students to be able to interpret epidemiological data and able to generate through information to which they have access and are therefore necessary theoretical and practical classes . Furthermore, it they can do independent research and produce documents, whether scientific or informative for the general public .
