Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The general objective of the curricular unit of Ethics and Professional Ethics is to familiarize the student with the fundamental concepts of Ethics, on the one hand, and pharmaceutical deontology, on the other, to the extent that they deal with the set of rules and duties for the exercise of pharmaceutical activity.
The specific objectives are: Understand and distinguish between the concepts of Ethics, Morals and Applied Ethics; know the fundamentals and principles of Bioethics; identify different deliberative models and be able to apply them in ethical decision making; be familiarized with the European code of conduct for research integrity and identify misconduct and questionable practices in Science |characterize pharmaceutical deontology; recognize the importance of deontology in the exercise of pharmaceutical activity; know its Deontological Code and the legal framework of pharmaceutical activity; discuss the importance of confidentiality in the exercise of the profession.
Syllabus:
1. Morals and Ethics: etymological meaning and definitions.
2. Bioethics: principles and foundations
2.1 Origins: abuses in scientific experimentation; the Nuremberg Code; the Declaration of Helsinki and the Belmont Report
2.2 The Barcelona Declaration (1998)
2.3 The Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UNESCO, 2005) and Law No. 21/2014, of 16 April -- CLINICAL RESEARCH LAW
2.4 Ethical issues at the beginning and end of life
3. Ethical dilemmas: deliberative methodology
3.1 Ethics and integrity of Scientific Research

Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Syllabus contents focus on the reflective thinking on ethical and deontological issues in the health area, with a focus on Phamaceutical Sciences. This critical thinking will ensure that the future professional activity will be based on ethical values, thus contributing to a more humanized approach, that respects the values of Integrity and Responsibility
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The teaching methodology will include theoretical exposure, research, promotion of reading activities of academic texts, and ethical deliberation.
The evaluation of the Ethics component will consist of a written test, complemented by the presence and active participation in the classes. The evaluation of this component will correspond to 70% of the final grade.
The evaluation of the Pharmaceutical Deontology component will consist of a written test with consultation. The evaluation of this component will correspond to 30% of the final grade.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The concepts, theories and mechanisms that are based on the programmatic contents of this letive unit will be presented succinctly, organizationally and descriptively. In order to acquire the necessary skills, the student will be encouraged to deepen his/her knowledge and seek their application in the resolution of practical cases beyond those mentioned in theoretical classes. At the end of the curricular unit, the student should be able to recognize ethical issues and deliberate on them; to know the principles and foundations of Bioethics, as well as national and international documents that guide bioethical reflection in the field of life sciences; understand the concepts of ethics and integrity in research and recognize deviations from the behavior patterns defined by the academic and scientific community. | To know the code of ethics of the order of pharmacists; Know the statute of the Ordem dos Farmacêuticos; Knowing how to identify the activities that constitute the pharmaceutical act; Know the ethical and deontological aspects of the different areas of pharmaceutical sciences.
