Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
This curricular unit aims to provide a conceptual knowledge and a global framework to understand the history of psychology and the epistemological traditions of psychological sciences and behavior.
(i) To demonstrate familiarity with concepts, and historical theoretical perspectives of psychology;
(ii) To describe and to explain the foundation of psychology;
(iii) To describe and to explain the mains theories of psychology;
(iv) To understand and apply the epistemology of psychology.
Syllabus:
1st Unit - 1. Epistemology and History of Psychology: Introduction. 1.1. Object and aim. 1.2. Origin and development of the Psychological Science 1.3. Methods of Psychology.
2nd Unit – 2. The theories of Psychology in 20th century. 2.1. Conceptualizations 2.2. Theoretical perspectives: Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, Cognitive-developmental Model, Gestalt Psychology, Humanist Approach.
3st Unit – 3. Epistemology of psychology. 3.1. Historical-epistemological analysis of science and psychology. 3.2. Historical-epistemological analysis models: Positivism; Rationalism; Theories of scientific revolutions. 3.3. Historical-epistemological approach to Psychology: critical analysis.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
1st unit - Syllabus contents focus on theoretical issues of the history of psychology, thus enabling the fulfilment of knowledge integration and allowing the historical framing of psychology;
2nd unit - Syllabus contents focus on the acquisition and integration of concepts, models, theories and knowledge of the main specialities, domains and intervention contexts of psychology.
3rd Unit – Syllabus contents focus on the deepening of theories, concepts and practices of analysis of epistemology of psychology, thus enabling the acquisition and development of academic skills of gathering and organization of information, of selection of relevant bibliography, of critical and comprehensive reading and writing of scientific papers; Development of a critical and self-critical attitude and the systematic adoption of ethical and deontological values.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references, as well as thematic debates and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous and based on an assessment test (70%) and a practical essay with an oral presentation and discussion (30%), as well as the execution of theoretical and practical tasks in the classroom, including students’ participation.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
1st unit - Theoretical exposition of contents related to the study of the history of psychology; presentation and handling of fundamental bibliography; Individual and group discussion of cases for different issues of the origin of psychological science. 2nd Unit – Theoretical exposition of contents related to theoretical subjects related to the concepts, models and theories of psychology; Presentation and discussion of practical cases of study of different approaches to psychology; Individual and group discussion of cases from the different perspectives of psychological science. 3rd unit -Theoretical exposition of contents related to theoretical subjects related to the study of psychology epistemology; Individual and group discussion of cases for the approaches of study of the epistemology of psychology; Presentation and discussion of practical cases of study on the main specialties, domains and contexts of application of Psychology.
