Spring SemesterPortuguese/English78
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) To integrate methods, techniques, concepts, models, theories and knowledge in the area of Inferential Statistics applied to psychology;
(ii) To acquire, develop and deepen knowledge and skills to perform data analysis;
iii) To acquire and develop knowledge and basic skills in research processes, such as defining research questions, hypotheses and research design, conducting field work and data analysis;
(iv) To select appropriate methods and techniques;
(v) To improve oral and written communication skills.
Syllabus:
Continuous Random Variables; Probability Distribution Function and Cumulative Distribution Function for Univariate Continuous Variables. Probability Distributions: Normal, chi-square, t-Student and F distributions. Sampling. Confidence Intervals: For Sample Mean, For Difference Between Two Sample Means, For One Proportion, For Difference Between Two Proportions, Sample Dimension Calculations. Parametric Hypothesis Testing: Approaches to Hypothesis Testing; Type I and II errors; The Z, t, chi-square and F tests. Analysis of Variance.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Syllabus contents focus on specific theoretical issues in the area of applied inferential analysis to Psychology, thus enabling the fulfillment of the course objectives, specifically: to integrate methods, techniques, concepts, models, theories and knowledge in the area of applied research to psychology; to develop knowledge and skills to perform psychological assessment, using descriptive statistics methods and techniques; to acquire and develop knowledge and basic skills in research processes.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous and based on two written tests, a practical essay, as well as the execution of theoretical and practical tasks in the classroom, and students’ punctuality and attendance.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical exposition of contents from probability and inference with applications in Psychology; Solving practical exercises and cases with the aim of demonstrating knowledge and skills in inferential data analysis; to master the main techniques and methodologies used in Inferential Statistics.
