Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit: | |||
Allow student to learn about the nature and nurture of violent and criminal behavior. Specifically, it is expected that at the end of the semester students have acquired the following competencies and results: ? Integrate concepts, theories and knowledge in the area of violence and crime ? Recognize, distinguish and confront the different theoretical contributions; ? Developing a holistic understanding of the criminal phenomenon; ? Understand, use and define specific terminology; ? Acquire the ability for a correct evaluation of specific problems of crime and violence; ? Developing a critical thinking about current criminality as well as a mature and reasoned position. ? Know to apply the acquired knowledge to different research contexts. ? the improvement of oral and written communication skills. | |||
Syllabus: | |||
Nature and Nurture of behavior. Major current theoretical perspectives. Biological theories. Psychological theories: theories of individual differences, personality, cognitive theories. Sociological Theories: Anomie, subcultures, environmental theories, labeling theories, theories of social learning, theories of social control. | |||
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives: | |||
The contents are intended to provide the student with knowledge about the different theoretical positions in relation to the explanation of the criminal and violent behavior. In this way the student can acquire the ability to interpret and critically understand such behaviors in real contexts. | |||
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation): | |||
The teaching methodologies include oral exposure of theoretical and practical contents and the use of current news about crimes, texts, exercises and audio-visual material that allow the student to identify and apply the theoretical perspective learned in the classroom to real cases. The assessment consists of one written test and a practical work (50% each). | |||
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes: | |||
Oral exposure of different theoretical perspectives, followed by elaboration of practical exercises allow the student to understand the different theoretical proposals for criminal and violent behavior and apply that knowledge to real cases. The assessment form aims to check the adquisition of these two capacities: knowledge and understanding of the various theoretical contributions and there practical application. | |||
