Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit: | |||
The objective of the CU is to teach Portuguese as a foreign language and to develop several skills simultaneously: linguistic, social, and intercultural in the host country. The specific objectives of the course are: to develop the students' linguistic and communicative skills so as to ensure an effective communication in different social and professional situations; be a tool for the students' specific academic and professional career; to promote autonomous learning and research. It also aims at consolidating grammar patterns, as well as teaching students to identify, comment on and produce different types of texts by developing their listening, comprehension, argumentative and problem-solving skills in Portuguese. The generic skills to develop are: communicate, understand, and produce oral and written texts in Portuguese, not only in social contexts, but also in academic and professional; to use the idiom in real life situations. | |||

The Syllabus focuses on the acquisition of vocabulary and grammar of the Portuguese language, thus enabling the fulfilment of the course objectives, specifically: to integrate knowledge, skills and abilities so as to have a more fluent and efficient communication in multicultural academic and professional contexts; to demonstrate knowledge and skills in performing tasks by using the Portuguese language accurately; and the immersion in the host University and country. | |||
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation): | |||
Different reading, writing, comprehension and text production activities are developed inherent to the development of communication skills in Portuguese. Assessment is continuous or final. Continuous assessment will be the sum of several elements: research work, reading reports, oral participation, oral presentation of the project work and 2 written tests. The final grade will be the weighting of the various written and oral services, with a weighting of 50% for the written component and 50% for the oral component. | |||
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes: | |||
The different reading, writing, comprehension and text production activities, inherent to the development of the communication skill in Portuguese language, meet the objective of ensuring an effective communication in different academic, social and professional situations in this language. The theoretical presentation of vocabulary in Portuguese is related to: private, social, and academic life; debating the different issues in Portuguese; the learning and applying grammar structures that come up in the written and oral texts used in the classroom; individual and group activities to promote vocabulary acquisition and grammar learning; individual and group activities aimed at improving oral and written skills; the theoretical presentation of vocabulary and linguistic resources to make a presentation in Portuguese and to discuss a topic; the discussion of issues in Portuguese; the draft of a research project on the experience of the individual as foreign student in Portugal. | |||
