Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The course addresses the political-cultural framework of globalisation, as a post-national context, aiming at bringing the students into the grounded debate on the subject. The students are expected to develop reading competences, oral and written expression competences and of critical debate of ideas. They are also expected to develop basic research competences.
Syllabus:
CONTENTS Unit I: Transnationalism and transculturation 1. The traditional framework: state, nation and nationalism 2. Beyond nationalism: transnationalism and globalization – cultural impacts 3. Core concepts and methodologies for studying transnationalism and transculturation Unit II: The political-cultural fields 4. Migration and diasporas 5. Transnational civil-society 6. Transnational politics 7. Summary: citizenship versus identity? 8. Case studies
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Knowledge and critical awareness on transnationalism require basic knowledge on some of political science and cultural studies contents and methodology. Case studies complement class work with students' autonomous research.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Lectures & tutorials: discussion of texts in class; students' presentations in class. ASSESSMENT: 2 theoretical assessment elements (70%) 1 individual report (written + oral presentation) (30%)
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The methodology adopted aims at fostering the students' interest and involvement with the topic. The tests and presentations aim at producing reliable indicators of learning outcomes.
