Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i). To integrate methods, techniques, concepts, models, theories and knowledge in the area of demographic politics, and migratory movements in contemporaneous societies.
(ii). Understand the relationship between population, control policies and rights of the family; the economic, social and political consequences of control and incentive birth.
(iii). Understand the different positions regarding the family demographics present in different ethnic groups, in the same society.
(iv). Discern on major contemporary challenges about demographic changes in different contexts and realities.
(v). The students shall acquire skills to work on policy development, on demographic politics and management of conflicts associated with the severe demographic changes, as the case of migration.
Syllabus:
The concepts of Demography and Migratory Movements. The biological and social reality of the Family and Population. Family as a cultural and Political institution. Birth, migration and population growth. Demographics, political and social development. Gender, work, social status and family. Migratory Movements in contemporaneous societies.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Unit 1-The syllabus contents focus on the deepening of specific theoretical subjects in the area of family sociology and demographics. The students must master the concepts of family structure, gender, population, population structure, migratory movements and demographic theories.
Unit 2-The contents are intended to enable the students understanding of the birth control policies. The students must understand and master the biological social and cultural dimensions that influence birth policies.
Unit 3-The programmed contents deepen the implications of migration on demographic structure of a population and should enable the students understanding of migratory policies.
Unit 4-The syllabus intends to provide fundamental knowledge for student’s heed how the profound changes in contemporary societies and their consequences in migratory movements.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous and based on a written test, a practical essay, an oral presentation and work discussion, as well as the execution of theoretical and practical tasks in the classroom, and students’ punctuality and attendance.
