Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
With this course we aim that the student has developed the skills to examine a neuromusculoskeletal patient, based on a logical and reasoned argument.
At the end of the course the student must be able to identify and execute selected techniques, know their indications and contraindications, to integrate knowledge formulating an appropriate clinical reasoning within the Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy. Clinical reasoning must be grounded in appropriate theoretical-practical concepts when selecting examination and rehabilitation procedures.
Different methods of assessment and treatment of the neuromusculoskeletal system will be addressed allowing the student to structure their own knowledge.
Syllabus:
Theoretical-Practical Component:
1. GENERAL ASPECTS OF NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL EXAMINATION
2. SUBJECTIVE EXAMINATION OF THE NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL PATIENT
3. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF THE NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL PATIENT

1.1. Upper limb
1.2. Lower limb
1.3. Spine
2. NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL MANAGEMENT
2.1. Upper limb
2.2. Lower limb
2.3. Spine

5. TMJ ASSESSEMENT AND TREATMENT
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Given the objectives of the course, a set of themes were selected, aiming to provide students with skills related to the assessment and rehabilitation of patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
The introduction of theoretical and practical knowledge related to assessment, dysfunction, and treatment of the components of the neuromusculoskeletal system and multimodal assessment of pain will allow students to develop reasoned arguments regarding the selection and implementation of evaluation and treatment procedures.
A practical approach to the contents related to the neuromusculoskeletal evaluation and management, clinical neurodynamics and introduction to clinical practice guidelines, in an evidence-based perspective, will allow students to develop practical skills of assessment and rehabilitation of patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Theoretical-practical component:
Selected content for this component will be addressed in expository form in theoretical-practical classes, encouraging active participation of students and using practical examples to facilitate their understanding.
Practical component:
The proposed themes will be addressed in practical classes where the techniques of evaluation and treatment, and clinical neurodynamics will be explained, demonstrated and practiced by students under constant supervision, and relevant clinical guidelines will be analysed.
Assessment:
The evaluation of the TP component consists of 2 written tests addressing the components taught and the evaluation of the practical component consists of practical tests where students will have to demonstrate practical competencies regarding the proposed themes.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The expository approach of the theoretical-practical aspects with active student participation allows the acquisition of knowledge concerning the fundamentals of neuromusculoskeletal assessment and treatment. The practical demonstration and subsequent supervised practice enables students to acquire practical skills related to evaluation and neuromusculoskeletal treatment and clinical neurodynamics. Analyzing clinical guidelines allows students to understand the assessment and treatment of people with relevant conditions from an evidence-based practice perspective. The theoretical-practical component will correlate its contents with the practical component and the practical component will be based on theoretical-practical component, resulting in the integration of knowledge, allowing the formulation of sound and grounded clinical reasoning within the neuromusculoskeletal examination and rehabilitation.
