Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The purpose of the thematic contents of this curricular unit are the initial development of linguistic and communicational competences in English thus ensuring learners to communicate in a variety of social and professional situations. This first contact will permit learners to acquire initial competences to communicate, understand and produce simple messages in English. This will be further developed in English Language II.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The course unit requires the contact hours and the student autonomous working time. To reach the objectives, theoretical and practical teaching methodologies will be used, including content presentation, roleplay, debates, dialogues, group and individual work. In the theoretical-practical classes, instrumental skills are highlighted: dialogue, listening, reading and understanding messages in English. The evaluation is continuous and consists of one written test (50%) and an oral work (50%). In all items the Pedagogical Regulation of the UFP applies.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
In order to maximize the specific competences of students, the methodology adopted (with an emphasis on the continuous assessment of knowledge) encourages the improvement of instrumental skills, namely the ability to communicate orally and in writing, to identify and understand messages, using the English language in a variety of social and professional situations, also considering it as a privileged means of access to knowledge in general. The adopted learner-centred methodologies, with an emphasis on practical issues, aim to encourage students to participate in simulated communicational and cultural contexts, thus providing them with the experience of gathering, identifying and interpreting information relevant to these contexts. Moreover, the methodology promotes autonomy at work in different cultural contexts. The acquisition of intercultural competencies allows students to communicate better in English, assuming that learning a language without these competencies will be less efficient.
