Learning Period:Language of Instruction:Total Hours:
Spring SemesterPortuguese/English78
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
To understand culture methods and metabolic features of microrganisms, and to be able to to perform basic microbiology protocols in order to culture and biochemically evaluate bacterial agents.
Syllabus:
Microbiology lab safety rules; biologic safety (levels 1-4); sterilization, antisepsis and disinfection methods; culture media; microbial culture: isolation and spreading techniques; microbial growth - influence of environmental factors, evaluation methods: growth on solid media, colonies, growth on liquid media, growth curves; microbial growth in the environment: biofilms and intercellular communication; applied microbiology: concepts on clinical, food and environmental bacteriological analysis.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Understanding microbial culture and metabolism allows the students to fulfill the UC objectives.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Theoretical classes will be lectured by explaining the program topics, in interaction with the students. PL classes will be held in the lab, where students will perform the microbiology protocols. The final evaluation will result from the theoretical evaluation (50%) and the practical evaluation (50%). The theoretical evaluation will consist on the mean of two written tests. The practical evaluation will result from the mean of two practical tests (40%), the mean of three class quizzes (40%) and the atitude and responsability demonstrated by the students (20%).
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The evaluation method allows the student to fulfill the UC objectives.
