Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Epidemiology, projects itself in learning and in practice of public health, as it works as a fundamental science. Acquire knowledge on the main environmental issues and its effects on health.
After attending this course the student should be capable of: to know and understand the terms, principles and general methods of epidemiology; understand the epidemiology of some specific entities of environmental sciences; tabular data, calculate measures of frequency and master some aspects of the collection, analysis and interpretation of research data. Understanding the specificity of the methods used for research in this area, in particular as regards quantification of exposures and risk assessment.
Syllabus:
Environmental Epidemiology. Environmental studies in epidemiology. Risk assessment in Environmental Epidemiology. Dimensions of the problem. Hazardous waste in the atmosphere, water, soil and in foods. Atmospheric hazards. Domestic consumption of water. The soil and foods as potential sources of risk in hazardous waste deposit sites. Biological markers in the studies of hazardous waste deposit sites. Opportunities in methodological advances in data analysis. Main conclusions and recommendations.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The teaching of environmental epidemiology begins with basic general concepts related to health and disease. As a quantitative science that is contains measures of health status and disease. Discusses types of study with indication of their methodological advantages and disadvantages. Differentiate the risk factors and not lead. We address some of the possible ways in planning an investigation, the errors that may affect them and how to minimize errors in different time of the study.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The contents will be transmitted in the classroom, in classes of type theorical-practical where the transmission of theoretical-practical to put into practice the theoretical knowledge through problem solving applied to environment; and tutorial classes.
The evaluation is continuous, through application of knowledge in individual assignments.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The methodologies of teaching and learning of this course were programmed to boost application of theoretical concepts learned. It is intended primarily for students to acquire basic knowledge and skills applicable in situations of environmental characterization of protective strategies conservation and environmental remediation practices.
