Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The main goal of this course is to provide complementary concepts to those already acquired in the field of reinforced concrete structures. In particular, to present and design special structures like walls, deep-beams and water tanks as well as to introduce the fundamentals, theoretical and practical of prestressed concrete in beams and slabs.
Syllabus:
- Design and detailing of structural concrete using strut-and-tie models;
- Design of Deep-beams
- Design of concrete Walls
- Structural Analysis and Design of Silos and Storage Tanks
- Design of prestressing structures (beams and slabs)
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
This course aims to present structures to students, which by their structural behavior, design process, material used and construction process, are considered special. The program consists of an introduction to special structures (deep-beam, prestressed concrete structures, retaining walls, silos, etc.) and the design process.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Continuous evaluation with two homeworks (10%), one mid-term (45%) and one final exame (45%).
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The course has two distinct components. The theoretical intends to transport the theoretical concepts of basic matters to special structures. The practical component intends to able the student to perform analytical calculations using spreadsheets and run automatic calculation programs. Knowledge is evaluated by individual or group, that will give the student the chance to search deeply a given topic, thereby broadening their knowledge. The tests, the student has the opportunity to demonstrate all their theoretical and practical knowledge on a consolidated basis.
