Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Provide expertise at technical and legal level for the implementation of technologies and procedures in the comfort of buildings, namely:
- Indoor air quality and ventilation needs;
- Terms of acoustic comfort - air sounds and percussion sounds; treatment of rooms for good audition of the sound;
- Terms of hygrothermal comfort taking advantage as much as possible of passive technologies, thus benefiting the economy and environment of the country
At the end the student must possess specific skills in the integration of knowledge and its application in the management of environmental quality indoors.
Additional soft skills to be worked on are:
• Work autonomously and in a team;
• Ability to for Planning and Organization;
• Ability to make decisions;
• Ability to self-learning;
• Ability to apply knowledge;
• Ability to adapt to new situations;
• Ability of Oral and Written Communication.
Syllabus:
Introduction: pollutant characteristics; factors affecting indoor air quality; heath effects of air pollutants; sources of indoor pollutants; control of indoor pollutants; Indoor air quality regulations.
Acoustics basic parameters and concepts; environmental acoustics; aerial and percussion noise in buildings; architectural acoustics; noise in the community: norms and regulations. Thermal environmental conditions for human occupancy; bioclimatic architecture; renewable energy in buildings; thermal insulation materials; thermal behavior in permanent regime; thermal bridges; condensations; regulations; energy certification of buildings.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The course contents are consistent with the goals formulated for the course since the topics included in the program covering the main aspects of the study introducing the basic concepts of Environmental Quality of Buildings and the legislation applied to the subject of concern.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The teaching methodologies are mainly expositive, interrogative and demonstrative, both during classes and tutorial orientation sessions. Case-studies are frequently used, in order to allow the interpretation and correct application of theoretical knowledge. Students are encouraged and oriented to perform research essays. Whenever possible, lectures with external guests are promoted.
The evaluation is continuous, through the practical application of knowledge in individual or group assignments, and research essays.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The methodologies of teaching and learning of this course were programmed in order to maximize a global view of the Environmental Quality of Buildings issues by the students as well as the policies and techniques applicable in its resolution. The teaching methodologies are consistent with the objectives of the curricular unit as the expositive methodology combined with the analysis of case studies; works and development of enable a good comprehension of the challenge posed to the future Environmental Engineers.
