Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The main objective of this course is to convey theoretical and practical fundamental concepts in the field of analysis, sizing and / or verification of current structures in metal and composite steel/concrete construction. The scope of the study to be carried out extends from its conception, modelling and discussion to its organic and structural operations, as well as their calculation and detailing.
The subject of Special Structures (metallic and mixed) aim to prepare students within the themes presented, with a view to their professional framework in the performance of specific activities to these branches of knowledge of Civil Engineering, allowing to achieve the following core competences:
- Design, analysis, sizing and verification of metal structures of standard buildings;
- Associate composite structural parts in metal structures, reinforced concrete and / or prestressed, of standard buildings.
Syllabus:
1. Characteristics of metal structures and scope.
2. Types of metal structures.
3. Verification according to EC3.
3.1. Basis for design
3.2. Security verification and methods of analysis of steel structures
3.3. Classification of steel structures.
3.4. Overall and local stability of steel structures.
3.5. States limits of use.
3.6. States.
4. Connections - Behaviour and design (screwed and welded).
5. Composite beams and pavements.
6. General design of metallic constructions (calculation and design of metallic and composite structures, their elements, connections and details).
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The contents presented cover the essential and coherent areas of knowledge to achieve the learning objectives formulated, given the topics included in the program.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Descriptive and demonstrative methodology resorting to the resolution of case studies.
1 - Continuous evaluation
It is based on the model of continuous assessment, in a theoretical-practical, with three evaluation components, consisting of two written tests and an individual project.
The final grade of the curricular unit results from the weighted average of the 2 evaluation elements, respectively, the following percentages: (i) Written assignment (30%); (ii) Periodic work (35%); (iii) Final assignment (35%).
2 - Final exam/ Special Season:
A single test, containing all the contents of the discipline.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The proposed methodologies are consistent with the goals formulated for the course as support the development-oriented study, so that the student is able to perform tasks autonomously. It aims to establish a parallel between the theory and practice applied to real problems that enable the student to solve current design problems in construction.
