Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Construction Materials course involves generic knowledge of some of the most common building materials. Emphasis will be put on the selection, employment and proper application of different materials.
The course themes involve materials employed vivil engineering works, as natural stone, aggregates, binders , mortars, concretes and woods, being anlysed their basic behavior, properties and main applications.
It is, thus, established the necessary level for the student to understand subjects that will be taught in other civil engineering courses.
Syllabus:
Basic properties of construction materials. Natural rocks. Aggregates. Cements. Mortars. Concrete, Wood.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The syllabus presented covers the essential areas of knowledge enbling the student to achieve the stated objectives, as the topics included in the program are basic proprerties of construction materials, natural stone and aggregates, binders, mortars, concrete and wood, covering the main aspects of
this study and enabling students to meet some of the most common building materials, with emphasis on its selection, use and correct application, in a building and other works related to construction.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
This unit will be subject to a expository, descriptive and demonstrative methodology, solving practical exercises in order to assess the characteristics of the materials, their behavior and their applications; to acquire skills within the testing laboratory and to test in practice the concepts acquired in the lectures.
Theory and practice component includes the following assessment:
2 written tests evaluation (75%) + 1 pratical case (25%) + Student's performance (5%)
Laboratory practice component assessment:
Reports prepared in the group with procedures specified in the experimental protocols developed during the laboratory classes (80%) + Sheets, prepared in the group with procedures specified in the experimental protocols developed during the laboratory classes (10%)+ student's performance (10%)
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The proposed methodologies are consistent with the objectives set for the course because the study supports the development of self-oriented study, enabling students to understand subjects taught in other courses. It is our goal to establish a parallelism between the theory and practice applied to real problems that enable students to identify materials currently applied in construction, select the most appropriate according to the specifications of the project taking into account the use, period of life and level desired quality and comfort.
