Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
By successfully completing this curricular unit students should be able to:
1 - Develop an effective synergy between the architectural design and the requirements of acoustic, thermal and indoor air quality of buildings;
2- Coordinate projects and works in the fields of architecture, acoustics, thermal and indoor air quality of buildings;
3- To carry out an analysis of non-conformities in buildings and propose improvement measures;
4- Applying technologies and legal procedures directed to the comfort of buildings in new construction and rehabilitation works in the following aspects:
4.1- Indoor air quality and ventilation needs;
4.2- Acoustic comfort conditions, both in terms of airborne sound insulation and percussion sounds, as well as in terms of the treatment of rooms where good sound hearing is paramount;
4.3- Thermal comfort conditions maximising the use of bioclimatic architecture methodologies and renewable energy systems.
Syllabus:
1. Indoor air quality: Introduction: characteristics of pollutants; impact on health and well-being; factors affecting indoor air quality; Pollution in the indoor environment: pollutants and main sources of emissions; effects on health; management of indoor air quality; The RECS: objectives and main regulatory obligations.
2. Acoustic comfort in buildings: Basic acoustic parameters and concepts; Environmental Acoustics; Sound Insulation in Building Acoustics; Architectural Acoustics; Noise in the community: standards and regulations.
3. Thermal Comfort in Buildings: human thermal comfort in buildings; energy performance of buildings and bioclimatic architecture; thermal behaviour of buildings on a permanent basis; energy certification of buildings.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
- Points 1, 2 and 3 of the programme contents allow students to develop an effective synergy between architectural design and the requirements of acoustic, thermal and indoor air quality of buildings, as well as to coordinate projects and works in the fields of architecture, acoustics, thermal and indoor air quality of buildings.
- Points 1, 2 and 3 of the programme contents allow students to carry out an analysis of non-conformities in buildings and to propose improvement measures.
- Point 1 of the programme contents allows the application of technologies and procedures aimed at indoor air quality and ventilation needs;
- Point 2 of the programme contents allows the application of technologies and procedures directed to acoustic comfort conditions;
- Point 3 of the programme contents allows the application of technologies and procedures directed towards thermal comfort conditions.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodologies: Expository, interrogative and demonstrative. Case oriented study is used to correctly interpret and apply the theoretical knowledge acquired to real situations. Guided research work is proposed on the topics covered. The evaluation of this curricular unit is carried out continuously during the theoretical-practical classes, through the practical work/exercises proposed for individual and/or group elaboration, and the research work carried out.
Evaluation system: The final grade (FG) is obtained by the following formula:
FG = 0.35 x A + 0.35 x B + 0.20 x C + 0.1 x D.
Where:A - 1st Assessment Test; B - 2nd Assessment Test; C - Thematic work; D - Performance (attendance/punctuality/achievement of the proposed tasks).
- The learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4.1 and 4.2 are assessed by evaluation components A, B, C and D;
- Learning outcomes 4.3 are assessed by evaluation components B, C and D.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
- Learning outcomes 1 and 2 are achieved through the presentation of solutions present in buildings already designed or constructed; - Learning outcome 3 is achieved by carrying out practical and research work; - Learning outcomes 4 are achieved by exposing, questioning and demonstrating various scientifically supported techniques and the rules of current legislation.
