Learning Period:Language of Instruction:Total Hours:
Portuguese/English39
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Know the principles of geographic information systems, their relationship with geography and topographic and cartographic heritage. Definition of coordinate systems. Creating and using relational databases with and without the use of GIS software. Analyze the implications of the quality and validity of data. Check the quality of the data . Planning and designing a GIS project. GIS databases model development. Analysis of spatial data and associated attributes. GIS as decision support systems. Thematic applications.
Syllabus:
1. Preliminary Concepts
2. Principles of Structured Information
3. Case-Study Analysis
4. Development and Management of a GIS Project
5. Presentation of the Project
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Teaching and learning methods were thought of to consolidate conceptual and theoretical knowledge and enhance practical application of theoretical concepts. Project analysis and interpretation will be done whenever adequate in order to stimulate practical oriented study. Proposed skills development will take place through exercises developed in class, group and/or individual project development and analysis in the classroom or as individual work.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
tests, essays
The teaching methodologies are mainly expositive, interrogative and demonstrative, both during classes and tutorial orientation sessions. Case-studies are frequently used, in order to interpret and correctly apply theoretical knowledge. Students are encouraged and oriented to perform research essays. Whenever possible, lectures with external guests are promoted.
The evaluation is continuous, through the practical application of knowledge in individual or group assignments, and a project development (case-study)
Final classification = 50% test + 20% weekly exercises + 10% final project in group + 10% final presentation +10% envolvement in class
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Introduction - Understand scales, projection and coordinate systems in a GIS; Structured information and case-study analysis - Apply vector and raster data structures adequately; Represent spatial geography and nature of geographic data; Understand relational databases; GIS project development - capture, store, analyze and present a GIS project
