Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Objectives and competencies to be achieved by the student in the discipline: - To analyze the different elements of urban space, the city fabrics and the urban forms - To produce a theoretical approach, based on concepts and comprehensive languages, in the context of contemporary architectural discourse - To know how to substantiate theoretically the achieved conclusions; to be able to communicate the results, either orally, written or graphically - To present projects of a complex architectural object, namely a urban facilities building, with updated constructive systems
Syllabus:
The pedagogical content of this unit is divided in two parts: - A projective conception that aims to develop the architectural design of public buildings, if possible, located in a dense urban space, with a collective and intensive use. Thus, the student's proposal should take place as a complete architecture design project in witch the alumnus must perform the necessary studies to achieve the scale of execution work. This work should also include a complex program and a high difficulty level of construction systems. - A theoretical analysis, within the unit, about the ways of apprehend the multiple fields present in the study theme. This means that the project should be concerned about the different city parts, its conurbations, focusing on the developed project. The procedural route is continuous, beginning in matters of program and methodology (1), supported by models and architectural references (2) and seeking to develop new typologies and new built settings (3).

Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
continuousThe practical study classes will be given with the use of expository resources, including descriptive and demonstrative techniques; in the practical/studio project classes there will be a individual and group tutorial attendance in order to discuss and analyze the work progress; within the discussion sessions/collective critics, there will be used expository methodologies, integrated with graphic display elements, written pieces and oral viva voce. To obtain the subject approval, the student must fulfill the ECTS planned for the discipline unit. The student must ensure assiduity, especially in the lectures defined as theoretical. The pace at which the students cumulative achieve the proposed goals will be verified through a process of continuous assessment in academic time. Also, this process must be present in the final portfolio (global synthesis work). The grade will result from the ranking of theoretical and practical work (informed by assessments related to each issue).
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The proposed methodologies are consistent and oriented according to the planned goals for the course unit. These goals aim to support the work directed to the development of an architectonic set, with a high level of complexity. This project must be a public facility building, exploring the urban and tectonic dimension of the intervention. It also should also be aware of the applicable regulation and legislation, along with a firmly based conceptual discourse. Therefore, in a first step, sustained by the students’ individual capacity and teamwork spirit, they will develop, through the design, the program of a building set capable of transform and rehab the city area and the surrounding premises. In this action, the students must apply the architectural knowledge towards a comprehensive and cultural transformation with the city area. In a second step, the student should introduce some conceptual principles capable of fitting the developed building program into an architectural piece, with consistency. In a third step, the process should be focused on the formal and constructive display of the architectonic proposal, underlining the technique dimensions, the regulation guidelines, and all the morphological elements that inform the conception. In the final stage the student should aim to communicate the project in several ways, namely throughout written texts, visual elements, oral discourse, in order to explain the project and the evolution of his work. This explanation should be, at the same time, a personal questioning of programmatic, morphological and technical principles. In the transition of each step the lecturer will promote the discussion, individually and in group, of all the proposals. This discussion will also include the analysis of the main conceptual principles, allowing that this process is followed by the performance, between teachers and students, in a tutorial attendance. With this process, and in this fourth step, all the classroom participants will provide a framework that allows the experience of the main contemporary architectural issues and its discussion, witch is the central goal of this lessons unit that is attended at the end of the architectural course.
