Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) To be able to apply knowledge and understanding, and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of ethics in architecture; (ii) To have the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, and formulate judgments with incomplete or limited information, but that include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of knowledge and judgments; (iii) To have the learning skills to be able to continue to study in a manner that may be largely self-directed or autonomous.
Syllabus:
Fundamental concepts for the development of an ethical reasoning; General definitions of “ethics” and “deontology”; Circles of ethical reasoning; Levels and stages of development of moral reasoning according to Kohlberg; Deontology in Architecture; Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development; Process of decision-making; Deontological Regulation of the Institute of Architects.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Syllabus contents focus on specific theoretical issues in the area of ethics, thus enabling the fulfillment of the course objectives, specifically: to understand their ethical and cultural context and to know how to apply the acquired knowledge in the field of ethics and deontology by demonstrating a professional approach based on ethics, to the work in the field of architecture.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, and reading of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous and based on a written test as well as on the development of two research papers.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical overview of the concept of ethics, deontology and morals as well as of the relation and difference between them. Theoretical overview of the circles of ethical reasoning, in order to enable the understanding of the subjective, intersubjective and social dimensions of ethics (according to Paul Ricoeur and with a particular emphasis on John Rawls’ notion of justice). Theoretical overview of the levels and stages of moral reasoning (according to Piaget and Kohlberg) emphasizing the path going from a heteronomous to an autonomous adult reasoning. The students make individual readings on the topics of this chapter and discuss them during classes.Theoretical overview of the concept of social responsibility and of sustainable development emphasizing their relevance for architecture. Theoretical exposition of the structure and the steps of the process of ethical decision making; Presentation of the structure, general and specific principles, and various sections of the Regulation of the Institute of Portuguese Architects.
