Learning Period:Language of Instruction:Total Hours:
Winter SemesterPortuguese/English52
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Convey to future architects the essential aspects of the design and analysis of structures. For this purpose, guiding principles and simplified methods that enable the prior location and preliminary design of major structural elements (slabs, beams and columns) are provided. Beyond the resolution of various exercises offered in the classroom, resulting in cases of practical structure analysis, students will also have to develop a structural design plant. At the end of the course the student should be able to design the architecture and to think about the structure that will sustain, distinguishing the various structural elements that compose it and designing them.

Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The syllabus presented in 5 are coherent with the objectives settled for the curricular unit once the topics included in the course program, presented in 4, such as types and structural elements, main structural materials, safety criteria and preliminary design methods of reinforced concrete framed and laminar structures, cover the main aspects of study cover the main aspects related to design and analysis of structures, allowing the students to use the achieved knowledge and to apply it in the specific case of a structural design of a house. In detail, the curricular unit introduces the basics of the design of major structural elements.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The curricular unit is structured in lectures, where the theoretical contents are presented and classes with a theoretical-practical character, where the discussion of concepts and the analysis of study cases are promoted. Simultaneously, support is given to an academic project, that consists in the development of the structural design of a house.
The assessment process consists on the evaluation of two written tests and the outcome of an academic project (structural design of a house).
The final grade of the student will be given by the following formula: Final grade = 30% Written test (T1) + 30% Written test (T2) + 35% Academic Project + 5% Student's effort
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The teaching methodologies are consistent with the objectives set for the curricular unit as the expositive methodology combined with the analysis of case studies, and the development of an academic project, enables a good comprehension of the challenge posed in structural design. The methodologies seek to establish a parallelism between the theory and practice applied to real problems.
