Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Introduction of the themes 'Environmental Management' and 'Health and Safety Management'; Knowledge of the management systems associated with this issues; familiarization with the principles and techniques of the implementation and certification of these two management systems. Introduction to the theme of Social Responsibility.
Syllabus:
Management Systems. Implementation and certification of an Environmental Management System: ISO 14001and Eco-Management and Audit Scheme – EMAS. Implementation and certification of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System. Social Responsibility.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
1. Environmental & Health and Safety Management: the aim of this item is to frame the theme of this curricular unit: what is environmental management and health and safety management, and what are the motivations for its implementation in organizational context.
2. Environmental Management System and Health and Safety Management System: the different reference standards regarding environmental management and health and safety management are introduced in this chapter. Special focus is given to the certification process of a management system.
3. Implementation of an Environmental Management System and Health and Safety Management System: a deep study regarding the requirements of the ISO 14001 Standard and of the OHSAS 18000 is focused in this chapter. Theoretical explanations will be always associated with case studies and practical applications regarding realistic professional problems.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The teaching methodologies are mainly expositive, interrogative and demonstrative, both during classes and tutorial orientation sessions. Case-studies are frequently used, in order to allow the interpretation and correct application of theoretical knowledge. Students are encouraged and oriented to perform research essays. Whenever possible, lectures with external guests are promoted.
The evaluation is continuous, through the practical application of knowledge in individual or group assignments, and research essays.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The teaching methodologies of this curricular unit were planned in order to enhance the practical applicability of the theoretical concepts transmitted. It is aimed to enhance students’ ability to identify adequate operational practices regarding environmental and health and safety management, and to make them aware of their active contribution regarding these practices. According to this, it is believed that learning methodologies like lectures with external guests, and case-studies, together with study orientation practices, will enable the students to understand the relevance of these subjects in the practice of organizational management, as well as the relevance of their role in this scope.
