Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
1 - Increase knowledge about assessment and rehabilitation of hearing loss;
2 - Increase knowledge about assessment and rehabilitation in Cochlear Implants;
3 - Increase knowledge about assessment and rehabilitation in the aquatic environment;
4 - Increase knowledge about assessment and rehabilitation of stuttering;
5 - Increase Knowledge of language assessment and Theory of Mind;
6 - Increase Knowledge about childhood dysphonia;
Syllabus:
1. Hearing loss and Cochlear Implants impact in oral language disorders
2. Oral language disorders rehabilitation in an aquatic setting
3. Stuttering impact in oral language disorders
4. Language Assessment in Children and Theory of Mind.
5. Childhood dysphonia
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The Programatic Contents (PC) were delineated in terms of Learning Goals (LG) of the course:
PC1 corresponds to LG1 and LG2; PC2 corresponds to LG3; PC3 corresponds to LG4; PC4 corresponds to LG5; PC5 corresponds to LG6
In PC1 issues including deafness and cochlear implants, classifications, language development, assessment and intervention of the speech therapist.
The PC2 focuses on traditional perspectives and neuro-developmental treatment, in addition to the physical properties of water and its effects on intervention of the speech therapist.
In PC3 issues including stuttering classifications, stuttering development and motor/linguistic symptoms, assessment and intervention of the speech therapist.
The CP4 focus the on formal and informal assessment, such as language tests for European Portuguese.
The CP5 focus on assessment and intervention on childhood dysphonia
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Theoretical-practical and practical:
- Presentations using projections, explanations on the board, exemplifications, clinical cases on video
- Summary and discussion of scientific papers
- Development of small exercises to be solved in the classroom, solving problems and doubts
Assessment:
Normal season:
- Individual work - 80%
- Assistance classes - 10%
- Participation in class and in seminars, conferences, congresses - 10%
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical and practical lessons Theoretical, and questioning approach to concept acquisition, with respective verification of learning. Presentation, analysis and discussion of the subjects in the lessons, guidance in critical thinking and research and reading research literature. The students should understand and improve theories and key-concepts related to oral language disorders in chilhood, particularly regarding the role of the speech therapist in the assessment and intervention and its relation to specific issues. Practical lessons Participatory approach with dynamic practice, analysis and discussion of materials and case studies . The students should apply knowledge in dynamic developed during the lessons, showing proficiency in building an adequate reasoning with ties to professional practice.
