Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The objective of this curricular unit is to acquire knowledge and to train students in the integrated execution of endodontic and operative dentistry clinical procedures in patients. Also aims to provide a scientific support, of simple and advanced techniques, basic rehabilitation of dental structures, but also within the pulp and periradicular pathology principles.
- Ability to do the diagnosis of inherent pathology that affects the tooth structure (complex-pulp-dentin and periradicular);
- Assess the vitality/ or not states of the tooth
- Ability to prepare appropriate endodontic treatment when indicated and / or temporary and / or permanent dental restorative rehabilitation, by direct approach using appropriate selection of materials and techniques.
Syllabus:
Retention auxiliary Medical Devices (dentine pins and radicular post). Extensive anterior teeth restorations. Vital and non vital dental bleaching. Evaluation of predisposing factors, prevention and treatment of dental hypersensitivity. Laser in Dentistry. Minimal invasive dentistry. Traumatology. Pain and Infection control in Endodontics. Irrigation and Instrumentation with new medical devices systems. Discussion of clinical cases . Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment / endodontic microsurgery.MTA
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The theoretical component (T) are mainly described the properties, advantages and disadvantages of the different materials and techniques associated with endodontic and operative dentistry, as integrated fields of intervention. The oriented clinical practice (LP) makes possible to contact and evaluate the state of vitality and tooth sensitivity, pathology of the dentin-pulp complex, root and / or peri-radicular diseases, for the purpose of diagnosis determination and treatment preparations in an appropriate conservative approach.
It is oriented the research and selection of appropriate scientific literature within the themes outlined in the program of this curricular unit, as the current evidence in the literature, thus fostering scientific reading, the development of critical capacity and contact with scientific nomenclature, as well as the motivation to the research works, papers and scientific presentations within conservative dentistry approach.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The evaluation of this curricular unit results from the balance of 20% for theoretical component (T) and 80% of clinical practice component (LP) and will be conducted in accordance with the University Education Regulations in force. Written test (20%; 0.5 ECTS operative Dentistry +0,5 ECTS Endodontics) + Clinical Practice (80%; 2 ECTS operative Dentistry+ 2 ECTS Endodontics); Failure to obtain a minimum grade of 9.5 (in Operative Dentistry and in Endodontics) in the theoretical typology refers the student to written exam according to academic schedule, and component. A minimum grade of 9.5 value is necessary to assessment the clinical practice evaluation (9.5 value for operative dentistry and 9.5 value for endodontic clinical acts) and to acquire the practical component of this curricular unit.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theorical (T) class are based in exposition and participatory methods, doing an inter-relation between cariology, operative dentistry and endodont sciences as well as the pathologies that affects dental hard tissues, that promotes reactions in the pulp-dentin complex, that compromise the tooth vitality, that affects the radicular and the peri-radicular tissues. A special privilege is made regarding literature review on curricular unit program contents, namely to, in vitro and in vivo trials, and several literature evidences. In Conservative Dentistry Clinical practice (LP) predominate the demonstrative and clinical practice by students, methods, regarding the observational exams, auxiliary means of diagnosis (sensibility and vitality tests, X-ray analysis), diagnosis determination and endodontic and operative dentistry clinical procedures. In the clinical practice with patients are collected and evaluated necessary data for rehabilitation of tooth structures (dental roots and crowns), are done endodontic treatments in mono- and pluri-radicular teeth, as well as the necessary operative treatments for restoring the teeth, according to conservative dentistry protocols, and also promoting the clinical patients attendance with clinical posture, quality and safety for the patient and for the dental team.
