Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The unit aims at providing the student with understanding of: the basic mechanisms of the immune response to endogenous and exogenous aggressions, the Immune System organs, anatomy and cells; the major humoral components of the IS, their molecular structure, function and mechanism of action; immunology of infection; immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, tumors and transplants; immunization and immunosuppression; strategies of therapeutic immunological manipulations; the major laboratory methods to study the immune system and the analytical methods of evaluation of its components.
Skills and capacities: Provide the student with practical skills to design, execute, interpret and validate Clinical and Research immunology laboratory results.
Syllabus:
Theoretical program: basic notions of the imune system: acute phase response, inflammation Complement system. T and B lymphocytes; T and B cell maturation, activation and diferentiation; B and T cell populations; Immunoglobulins; Antigen presenting cells (APC) and dendritic cells; MHC functions, structure and modulation; Cytokine main functions; Integrated response of the immune system in the infection; Immunization - active and passive; immunodeficiencies I and II; hypersensitivity; tumors; tolerance and autoimmunity; pathology of the oral cavity.
TP program: cell culture and cell separation tecnhiques; antibodies as laboratory diagnostic tools; cytologic and serologic tecnhiques; blood cell separation and counting; immunofluorescence ; immunocytochemistry; indirect ELISA and antibody detection; plasma protein separation; flow cytometry; diagnosis of oral pathology
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The students should recognize the immune system and all cellular processes involved in the generation of the immune response: cells and organs. They should, progressively, be able to describe all the structural properties of the antigenic response receptors and how to manipulate them for therapeutical purposes. Students should also understand the diversity of immune mechanisms involved in infection, immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity, tumors, autoimmunity and transplants. In paralell with the global presentation of the concepts, and, from a theorical-practic point of view they should learn the basic immunologic techniques to evaluate the immune response and diagnose simple pathologies. We will also focus the current investigation in dentistry in the context of the discipline.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The Theoretical classes will be lectured all programs contents. During the theoretical sessions student participation will be encouraged, correlating concepts learned to ethical and practical aspects of future professional life; there will be a solid transmission of all the theorical knowledge in a progressive and continuous way. In theoretical-practical classes, immunological techniques used in diagnosis and research will be introduced, as well as concepts about oral immunity.
Evaluation: the evaluation is in accordance with the University Regulations - 70% of the final grade will result from the mean of two theoretical tests (2 written evaluations) (minimal mean: 8 points); 15% of the final grade will result from a theoretical-practical test; 15% of the final grade will result from an oral presentation of a scientific paper, during a theoretical-practical class.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical Component - discussions on immune concepts included in the program topics will be encouraged; short questions and written tests will evaluate if the student is making progresses . The classes will be supported by individual or group guidance sessions that will meet the student's major knowledge gaps. Theorical-Pratical Component - The student should be able to answer basic questions about immunologic diagnosis techniques and develop oral presentation skills, namely the research of scientific papers in dentistry and immunology; he should be able to analize recent literature and explain its importance in research context.
