Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
To enable students to obtain sufficient knowledge for the practice of non-surgical endodontic treatment.
Syllabus:
Tooth & pulpar anatomy and morphology (revisions). NonSurgical Endodontic Treatment: concept and clinical phases. NonSurgical Endodontic Treatment - instruments, materials and devices. Access cavity: concept, instruments, execution. Clinical protocol in single canal teeth. Determination of working length by the radiographic method. Glyde path concept. Cleaning and shaping: concept, instruments, and manual execution techniques: Roane, Crown-Down and Step-Back. Apical gauge. Form and cleanliness prerequisites for filling. Filling: concept, instruments and clinical protocol of Lateral Condensation technique. Radiology in Endodontics: review of techniques, identification of normal and pathological structures.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Endodontics I intend to provide the student with knowledge and ability on how to address and on correct execution of nonsurgical endodontic treatment. For such, the theoretical component fundamentally addresses the endodontic treatment protocol as well as the concepts inherent in anatomy, morphology and physiology of the dental root canal system. The guided practice compound allows the execution of nonsurgical endodontic treatment in anterior and premolar teeth (as they are single-root canal teeth). Research and selection of appropriate scientific literature within the topics described in the syllabus of this course is oriented, thus fostering scientific reading, the development of critical skills and contact with scientific nomenclature.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The evaluation of this curricular unit results from the balance of 60% for theoretical component (T) and 40% of practice component (P) and will be conducted in accordance with the UFP Regulations in force. Failure to obtain a minimum grade of 9.5 in the theoretical typology refers the student to written exam according to academic schedule. A minimum grade of 9.5 value is necessary to to acquire the practical component of this curricular unit. The student with a grade lower than 9.5 in the practical component is declared “not approved”.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theorical class emphasize the expository and participatory methods with a view to a content interrelationship science between anatomy, radiology, cariology and endodontics. The focus is on literature on the timeliness of the content displayed on the unit's program, especially as the in vitro and in vivo, and other evidence from the literature on them. In practical classes predominates demonstrative method and practice by students, for the implementation of endodontic treatment.
