The student should be able to:
- Make the diagnosis of premalignant lesions and malignant
- Guide treatment and referral of patients
Syllabus:
1 - Carcinogenesis and stage classification
2 - Epidemiology of cancer
3 - Potentially malignant lesions
4 - Oncologic Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy
5 - Diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer
6 - Diagnosis and treatment of the salivary glands
7 - Management of oral complications associated with cancer treatments
8 - Oral manifestations of hematologic malignancies
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The topics covered throughout the curriculum of this unit, allow sensitize and provide students with knowledge about head and neck cancer, including its areas of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary therapeutic guidance and patient management. These skills are essential for students as future dentists and their actions towards patients with this type of cancer
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The methodologies are based in classroom teaching. Expository, interrogative and demonstrative methods will be used, in theoretical and theoretical-practical sessions. The self-study orientation by consulting recommended bibliography is also provided to the student.
The evaluation will be ongoing, including moments of written assessment (2 tests). Active forms of assessment as individual or group works will be also used.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The teaching methods employed range from the theoretical study to the transmission of individual and professional experiences, and discussions in the classroom, based on "problem issues" and clinical cases. These different teaching approaches, aim to develop in students the ability to create their own model of learning, adapted to each educational topic
