Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
ionizing radiation knowledge demonstration and radioprotection . Knowledge of radiographic intra and extraoral techniques. Interpretation of normal images , pathology and treatments performed . Provide students with skills in the study and implementation of imaging techniques and their interpretation to diagnosis and treatment in dentistry .
Syllabus:
History of radiology. Atomic physics and radioactivity. Interaction of radiation with matter. Geometry of Image Projection. Physical Effects of Ionizing Radiations. Radioprotection and possible harmful biological effects of the use of ionizing radiation. Radiological protection: general principles, patients and workers. Intra-oral radiographic techniques. Radiographic Accessories and Development Chemistry / Laboratory Processing. Radiographic anatomy of the maxilla and mandible. Errors and artifacts. Quality criteria.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The contents are consistent with the goals of learning in this course to the extent that allow the acquisition of knowledge and the development of clinical skills that are required for all activities in which oral pathology is involved.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
"The Course has a total of 4 ECTS credits and total contact hours are distributed by Theoretical Component (TC, 15 hours), Theorical-Practical Component (TPC, 15 hours), Tutorial Orientation (OT, 7.5 hours) and Other (O, 7.5 hours).
In classes the syllabus will be taught using the support of multimedia devices. Relevant theoretical concepts will be exposed and discussed the in the classroom and self-study will be guided using the recommended bibliography.
Assessment is continuous and consists in a written test in TC and a report on periapical radiographs in TPC. Attendance according to academic rules of University Fernando Pessoa will be considered as well. The student will be considered approved if the final classification is equal or higher than 10 (ten) values. The final classification results from the 50% T and 50% TP. There is no need for a minimum grade for each component.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
"Teaching methods have been developed in order to promote the most effective and direct knowledge transmission allowing a more effective teacher-student interaction, needed for the acquisition of knowledge and core competencies in the daily practice of a specialist in dentistry. Tutorial Orientation (OT) sessions consist of guidance sessions for students, enabling them to properly use the bibliography, to develop scientific research methods focused on the syllabus topics. Scientific reading favouring the contact with scientific nomenclature will be promoted. The development of judgment skills needed for scientific review, will be considered. Other (O) are free sessions designed to enable the student to clarify scientific methodologies used in presentation of research results."
