Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit: | |||
The main competences to achieve with this discipline are: - Recognition of the characteristic signs and symptoms of different temporomandibular disorders (TMD), differential diagnoses and techniques to be used in their treatment; - Recognition of different types of orofacial pain, with particular attention to the clinical features associated with chronic orofacial pain, as well as the particularities of their treatment; - Recognition of sleep disorders affecting the stomatognathic system, especially the sleep bruxism; - Clinical and laboratory use of a semi-adjustable articulator and therapeutic occlusal squeme; - Conducting a clinical evaluation (history, physical examination and supplementary diagnostic tests) to achieve a clinical diagnosis of TMD; - Implementation of therapeutic protocols in more frequent TMD | |||

Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives: | |||
The lectures will be taught in order the students have the notion of neurophysiological mechanisms that underlie the different orofacial pain, with special emphasis on chronic orofacial pain. Obtaining knowledge of the etiology and pathophysiology of TMD, diagnosis (clinical and diagnostic tests) and of the different therapeutic modalities used. Diagnosis of sleep disorders affecting the oral cavity. The laboratory classes will be taught so that the preparation for the clinical component is maximum, allowing students to use essential techniques to establish medical diagnoses and treatment plans, as part of occlusal rehabilitation and treatment of TMD. | |||
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation): | |||
Theoretical teaching (T) supplemented by laboratory practice (PL) This teaching will be supported by follow-up tutorial teaching (OT) of the knowledge acquired in both components and other activities (O) including research. In this course the theoretical assessment and LP1has a weight of 80% of the final grade and is evaluated by one writing test. The evaluation of the laboratory practice is 20% of the final grade and is evaluated by continuous evaluation. The minimum approval rating in each of these components is 9,5 values. Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes: | |||
The lectures with expository character and complemented by adequate bibliography, aims that students acquire the basic knowledge for the diagnosis of different types of orofacial pain. Understand the etiology, recognize the characteristic signs and symptoms of the different TMDs and know the indications to different auxiliary diagnostic tests and therapeutic approaches of TMD. The laboratory classes with demonstration purposes, followed by preclinical realization of different works by the students aim that the student is able to perform an assembly and programming of a semi-adjustable articulator, analyze the occlusal parameters in models and carry out the technique of selective wear. It is wanted that the student in pre-clinical setting is able to perform a clinical history and examination for diagnosing TMD, dominate the main diagnostic tests and apply therapeutic protocols for the most common TMD. | |||
