Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
To acquire knowledge about therapeutic, preventive and restorative treatments with direct dental materials used in the aesthetic, biological and functional dental structures rehabilitation. To enumerate and to describe the advantages, disadvantages, indications and limitations of the dental materials restorative procedures in clinical practice. To execute, in a clinical field, simple and advanced operative procedures in Dentistry patients; To do clinical examinations and diagnostic tests through proper tools such as inspection and imaging means, in clinical dentistry; To determine diagnosis and plan priorities of prophylactic and therapeutic treatments in dentistry; To evaluate information gathered from the patient and be able to give clinical response with posture and appropriate means of communication in dentistry rehabilitation.
Syllabus:
Dentistry clinical registration. Dentistry protocol. General considerations for correct diagnosis elaboration. Temporary and definitive restoration materials. Bands and edges. Incremental modified technique. Techniques to execute interproximal contact in composite Class II restorations. Cervical caries lesions. Extensive amalgam restorations. Minimally invasive dentistry. Patient’s dentistry clinical appointments.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Theoretical (T; One hour per week) classes: Dentistry clinical registration. Dentistry Protocol; Key steps for making diagnosis in Dentistry. Provisional restorative materials. Restorative materials used in Dentistry, clinical indications. Wedges and matrix systems. Composite resins restoration techniques in posterior teeth. Contact points. Cervical cavities. Large amalgam fillings. Post operative tooth sensitivity. Minimally invasive dentistry. Laboratory Practice (LP; Three hours per week in clinical setting): Treatment of patients within the dentistry III clinical setting. Tutorials (OT; 7.5 hours) + Other sessions (O; 7.5 hours): Guided research to clinical cases; proper use of auxiliary diagnostic means (eg. Photography, imaging) and medical devices with clinical applicability, in operative dentistry.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The evaluation results from weighting 50% of the theoretical (T) and 50% of the laboratory practical (LP), in clinical field, components, and will be carried out according to the University Educational Regulation in force. The (T) component assessment comprises a written test according to dentistry III program. The minimum approval rating in the written test will be of 10 values. Failure to obtain a minimum grade in the written test refers the student to appeal exam in time for this purpose, fixed in the academic schedule. Laboratory practical assessment (PL), in clinic, includes attendance (90%), punctuality and attitude in patient care, scientific, technical and relational skills, and quality of clinical work, workspace organization and cleanliness. The assistance scheme for classes is adopted at the Pedagogical Regulations in force. For dentistry III accreditation the student will have to ensure obtaining the 4 ECTS provided, fulfilling the described evaluation.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Theoretical (T; 16 hours; One hour weekly) class are based in exposition and participatory methods, and intended to expose and update, descriptive and organizational form, the concepts, theories and assumptions described in the Dentistry III syllabus, supported by a bibliography, and are aimed at developing scientific and professional skills in students; Laboratorial practice (LP; 48 hours; Three hours weekly) predominate the demonstrative and clinical practice by students, to patients care. Sessions held weekly at the clinics will be supervised and monitored by responsible teachers. Will be made intra-oral examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of tooth structure with direct restorative materials for development of therapeutic skills and to improvement of surgical techniques in Dentistry, according to clinical protocols and good practice guidelines, thus, promoting clinical patients attendance with clinical posture, quality and safety. Tutorial Orientation classes (TO; 7.5 hours) consist on sessions for pupils guidance to allow bibliographies correctly use, develop scientific research methods for evidence support in clinical cases observed in clinical practice. Other (O; 7.5 hours) sessions are free and are designed to enable the student to an accurately use of auxiliary diagnostic means (example: Photography, imaging, apex locators) and medical devices, for clinical application, as part of this curricular unit.
