Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
By the end of the semester, and once completed all the evaluation moments, the student should have aquired the necessary competences needed for the safe practice of the most frequent anesthesia and sedation technics used and available in the modern Dental Medicine practice. Must have learned suficient theoretical knowlegde that permits to understand the diferent aproaches to the patient in the contents of anesthesia, analgesia and sedation on those cases with clinical indication.
Must be able to stratify correctly the patients in wich concerns to their clinical history, and perform the most adequate anesthetic approach and, in the case of sedation evaluate the indications, contraindications, the drugs, dosis and the most adequate techniques as well as understand correctly the sedation process, its different levels from minor till general anesthesia, demanding on certain cases the support of other professionals as the anesthesiologists.
Syllabus:
Review of nervous system; autunomous and peripheral. Review of hepatic and renal metabolism. Physiopatholoy and mechanisms of pain. Acute and Cronic pain. What is sedation and anesthesia. Definition of sedation; sedation levels: minor, moderate/conscious, profound and general anesthesia. Use of sedation on Dental Medicine. Sedation on adults; administration ways; sedation on pediatric patients. Adequability of sedation in office-based facilities; frequent drugs used in DM: benzodiazepines, opioids and volatiles. Nitrogen dioxide; general principles; advantages and disadvantages for patients and clinics, associated risks. Stratification of risk and patient selection; ASA classification; basics about airways and ventilation; different approaches, methods and techniques and clinical indications. Drugs used. Frequent emergency situations in DM practice; recognition and approach.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
From the learning process the student will get the competences for the use the techniques and drugs that will alow the best results in confort and safety of the patient as well as understand wich patients should be treated in a office-based model and in a hospital environment.
Its expected also that the students understand the advantages of using sedation techniques in some patients and fell confident in using them on those patients that will benefit of this kind of sedation techniques, some of wich can be safely performed by the DM.
It is also expected that the students can recognize the most frequent emergencies in the ambulatorial dental medicine and respond appropriately to them.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The classes are theoretical-practical, of expositive, demonstrative, with discution of real clinical cases. Its expected that the students learn and understand the contents as well as discuss the cases that may consider interesting.
Evaluation is continuous and based in the acomplishment of competences by the students. Its relevated the personal interest and motivation for the educational process as well as the clinical applicability. The classes allow to evaluate the continuous performance of the pupils and the written tests a quantitative learning reinforcement.
The evaluation its constituted by two written tests of 60 minutes duration each and with a value of 45% each on the final classification. The remaining 10% dependo n the motivation, interest and commitment demonstrated during the semester. Its also possible to do a final exam by the end of the semester as well as the extraordinary situations previewed on the Regulament.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The adopted learning methods allow the acquisition of competences and the evaluation methods motivate the student to gradually achieve them, and accordingly with the law and the internal regulament.
