Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
LG1. . Demonstrate knowledge about Occupational Therapy and intervention areas.
LG2. List the various factors that characterize aging.
LG3. Recognize the proper pathologies of the elderly.
LG4. Demonstrate knowledge about functional changes in aging.
LG5. Identify the context adaptation needs in aging.
LG6. Interpret functional evaluation in elderly.
LG7. Demonstrate knowledge about the role of the Occupational Therapist in the intervention with the elderly.
Syllabus:
CP1. Definition of Occupational Therapy, theoretical foundations and intervention´s areas.
Introduction to the study of the aging process: some concepts.
CP2. Aging process. Main Physical, Cognitive and Social Changes arising from the Aging Process.
CP3.Main Pathologies associated to the Aging Process.
CP4. The Role of the Occupational Therapist: Process of Evaluation and Intervention to the Elderly. Positions and Transfers of the Elderly: theory and practice.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The Programmatic Contents (PC) were delineated in terms of Learning Goals (LG) of the unit, for students improving skills development that enable them to deepen knowledge as well as analyze and reflect critically about the Speech and language Therapist intervention in educational settings. In this way:
PC1 correspond to LG1;
PC2 correspond to LG2;
PC3 correspond to LG3;
PC4 correspond to LG4, 5, 6 and 7.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Theoretical and practical classes
Expositive methodology, with presentation of programmatic contents using projections, explanations in the board, examples and clinical cases
Active and collaborative methodology, with oral presentation, analysis and discussion of the topics in the class, problem solving in small discussion groups with oral presentation to the class and activities of brainstorming.
Practical classes
Participatory/active and collaborative methodology, through a practice based on learning with the development of practical dynamic groups, case-study, and role-play.
Evaluation: Normal Season:
The final grade of the unit results from the weighted average in the following terms:
- 1º Written Exam - 35%
- Small group dynamics 30%
- 2ªWritten Exam – 35%

Final written Exam (100%)
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The methodology used in practical classes allows students to obtain increase knowledge as well as a better understanding and ability to discuss the content covered, promoting concept integration, ability to research, analysis and critical thinking, facilitating the work for speech therapist. With practical lessons, in which the methodology assumes a more participatory nature (with the development of dynamic practices and case studies, guidance on critical reflection and analysis of specific situations), is intended to provide the ability to apply knowledge in dynamic practices developed during lectures, promoting the development of skills related to the construction of an adequate and reflective reasoning, connecting to professional practice. Thus, it is considered that teaching methodologies adopted for this course are consistent with the goals set for it, since they allow increase knowledge of the content covered in lectures, where students have the ability to analyze, discuss and reflect what is relevant for a future practice of a Speech Therapist.
