Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The objective of this course is to give the students knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology of the vestibular system, so he can perform and adequate evaluation of a patient with vestibular dysfunction and consequently delineate a proper treatment program
Syllabus:
This course will include the following subjects: anatomy, physiology, pathology, evaluation and treatment of the vestibular system.
During the course the student should be able to understand the importance of this system, and knowledge of how it works, as well as to develop a proper evaluation and treatment strategies.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Initialy, the classes have a more theoretical component, focusing mainly on the anatomophysiology of the vestibular system, knowledge that is key for the understanding of the pathology of this system.
On the practical classes, the student should be able to recollect the information learned about anatomophysiology and pathology of the vestibular system, and to be able to learn and implement techniques that allow him to evaluate and treat a patient with vestibular disfunction, or any other type of non-vestibular dizziness or vertigo.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The final grade will be averaged between three written exams related (specifically) to: Anatomophysiology and pathology of the vestibular system; Clinical and laboratory assessment of the vestibular system; and treatment of pathology/disfunction of the vestibular system.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
On the theoretical classes, being a totally new subject of study, anatomophysiology of the vestibular system will be taught in an expository fashion. Pathology will be taught using both the expository and discussion method, so that the student is capable of integrating the knowledge. During the practical classes, about evaluation and treatment, there will be disscussion of various subjects, so that the student is capable not only of understanding better the vestibular system, but also to start developing clinical reasoning. There will also be a demonstrative part associated with repeated practice, so that the student is not only capable of efectively perform the treatment and evaluation techniques, but also to minimize the most common mistakes.
