Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The main objectives of Pharmacology and General Therapeutics are the learning of the fundamentals of Pharmacology and to correlated them to the physiotherapist daily practice: O1. Understand the role of the physiotherapist in the field of Pharmacology and Therapeutics; O2. Acquisition of knowledge of pharmacology and of the major pharmacotherapeutic groups; O3. General understanding of clinical pharmacokinetics parameters; O4. Knowledge and learning the communication of adverse effects; O5. Understanding the role and the possibility of drug interactions; O6. Acquisition of tools to communicate and to promote patient adherence to therapy; O7. Acquire knowledge in the field of pharmacology that allow conceiving and developing actions on education and health, as well as to integrate multidisciplinary teams O8. Identify adverse drug reactions and understand the role of pharmacovigilance; O9. Develop autonomy in the search for drug related information.
Syllabus:
CP1. General principles of Pharmacology, Drug versus medicine. CP2. Routes of Administration and Dosage Forms. CP3. Drug’s pathways in the body (ADME). Basic pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination), and clinical pharmacokinetics. CP4. Pharmacodynamics and general mechanisms of drugs action. CP5. Drugs acting at the central nervous system: (sedative and hypnotic, psychostimulants and drugs of abuse). CP6. Skeletal muscle relaxants. CP7. Drugs acting on pain control: opioid analgesics and nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs. CP8. Special Aspects of pregnant, pediatric and geriatric Pharmacology. CP9. Drug interactions, and adverse drug reactions and pharmacovigilance. CP10. Sources of drug Information.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The contents comprising the curricular unit of Pharmacology and General Therapeutics provide the students of Bachelor of Physiotherapy the acquisition of scientific, technical and interpersonal skills in order to develop physiotherapy interventions in the field of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Knowing the basics of pharmacology and also the major pharmacotherapeutic groups (syllabus contents CP1 to CP8) allow the student to achieve the objectives O1, O2, O3, O4, O5, O6 and O7. The exposure of contents on adverse effects and drug interactions as well as drug information sources (syllabus CP9 and CP10) allows the student to achieve the objectives O8 and O9.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching Methodologies M1: Presentation and discussion of relevant theoretical concepts in the classroom M2: Brainstorm on pertinent issues related to the matter exposed and in the resolution of exercises M3: Discussion of problems and relevant clinical cases. M4: Use of the e-learning platform to store and make educational material available to the student. Evaluation Students will be assessed with two written tests, with a weight of 50% each for the calculation of the final grade.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The constant interaction between the teacher and the student in the classroom will allow adequate the student to acquire the objectives. In addition, the use of a set of study materials purposely created, as well as tutorial sessions for inquiries will allow a high level of adjustment between the methodologies and objectives of the course.
