Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) Acquire the theoretical and methodological bases of work/research in anthropology and sociology of health;
(ii) Acquire and develop knowledge and skills that allow discussing and evaluating a new paradigm in the analysis of health and illness both in sanitary spaces as social communities.
(iii) Be able to work “body”, the different parts and its symbolic meaning, in cultural and social context;
(iv) Develop a critical capability in relation to health policies, discerning their ideological and cultural bases, for the construction of a more just society;
(v) Improve oral and written communication skills.
(vi) Develop a critical attitude and self-criticism as well as adopt ethical and deontological values at work, with the methodology and anthropological perspective.
Syllabus:
1st Unit - Introductory considerations. Presentation of the syllabus. Methodologies of work and evaluation. 1. Health in sociology and anthropology. 1.1. Change of paradigm in work and health research. 1.2. Research and theories in the social sciences and its relationship to health problems; 1.3. Methodology of work and research in the social sciences and their use in the field of sanitary work.
2nd Unit – 1. The body, bodily changes, emotions and lifestyles. 1.1. Cognition and mechanisms of belief about the sick body. 1.2. Mechanisms for monitoring and reporting the emotions. Pain and suffering. 1.3. Naturalization of the body; 1.4. The communication of the disease.
3rst Unit – 1. Health institutions and Health policies. 1.1. A history of medicine and of social policies. 1.2. Power, economy and medical practice; 1.3. Lifestyles and Health; 1.4. Social Justice and social groups in access to health.
4rst Unit – 1. Anthropology of space for sanitary spaces; 1.1. The Hospital and the labs
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
1st unit – Syllabus contents focus on specific theoretical subjects in the field of anthropology and sociology of health. These lectures enable students to acquire the basic concepts and the field of work, and that allows them to address other disciplinary fields of health subject.
2nd unit – Syllabus develops the major themes that deal with the relationship between the body, disease, medical and laboratory practice, and the social, cultural and emotional expressions.
3rst unit. – The syllabus covered in this part is the base of main problems and challenges facing the contemporary society in its relation with health in medical institutions. Particular attention has been in the social policies of access to health services.
4rst unit – Syllabus will give a particular perspective of medical and laboratory space within the researches in anthropology of space.
5rst unit. – This unit helps students to have a holistic perspective of health, which is one of the objectives of the curricular uni
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous and based on a written test, a practical essay, an oral presentation and work discussion, as well as the students’ punctuality and attendance.
