Learning Period:Language of Instruction:Total Hours:
Winter SemesterPortuguese/English65
Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The goals are: i) to provide basic knowledge in Histology and embryology, ii) to give the bases for interpretation of histopathology, iii) to apply the knowledge obtained and, iv) to develop critical skills in learning and communication.
Syllabus:
Organism’s levels of organisation (cell, tissue, organs and systems). Basic tissues: epithelia (surface and glandular), connective tissue (proper, special and support - cartilage and bone), muscle (striated – skeletal and cardiac, and smooth) and nervous (neurons and supporting cells). Cardiovascular system. Respiratory system: conducting and respiratory zones. Urinary system: kidney and urinary tracts. Lympathic system: thymus, spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes and MALT. Integumentary system: skin and appendages – sebaceous and sweat glands, hair follicle and arrector pili muscle. Digestive system: gastrointestinal track and accessory digestive glands (liver, pancreas and salivary glands). Endocrine system: hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals and pineal glands. Male reproductive system. Female reproductive system. Fertilization, embrionary and initial fetal development
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
Cytology, Histology and Embryology are classical disciplines for several university degrees in the field of health sciences. In preparing the syllabus of this course, it was took into consideration the acquisition of updated theoretical knowledge, but giving up particular emphasis to overlapping of the three areas. The understanding and application of theoretical concepts, namely the relationship between structure and function of tissues and organs, will be demonstrated through the presentation and discussion of relevant clinical cases. Finally the skills acquired by students will be validated during the laboratory sessions using the observation and identification of histological preparations.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Classes will be theoretical and laboratory sessions. Theoretical sessions will emphasize the acquisition of basic knowledge of the discipline, and it will be presented and discussed some clinical cases. In laboratory sessions will be privileged the observation and identification of histological preparations. The evaluation of the acquisition of skills by the students in this course will be done by conducting written tests of theoretical and practical nature, always favoring the model of continuous assessment.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The teacher will use adequate tools by taking into account the particular nature of each lesson. Theoretical sessions will focus on the acquisition, understanding and application of basic knowledge through classroom lessons in which the teacher with the support of multimedia devices will teach the discipline syllabus. The teacher will always play a role of facilitator and organizer of the contents, stimulating the active exchange with students. It will also be presented, analyzed and discussed some clinical cases. Finally during the laboratory sessions, by using the compound light microscope, students will observe several histological preparations of tissues and organs and the knowledge acquired in the theoretical sessions will be evaluated. The student supervising outside of the classrooms will help the students to acquire the expected skills.
