Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
The aim of this subject is to develop contents which may provide an insight into the History of Psychology in the past centuries:
LO1. To demonstrate familiarity with concepts, and historical theoretical perspectives of psychology;
LO2. To describe and to explain the foundation of psychology;
LO3. To describe and to explain the mains theories of psychology;
LO4. To describe and to explain the concept of epistemology;
LO5. To describe and understand the epistemology of psychology.

S1. General introduction to the study of the psychology
1.1. Concept
1.2. Origins of the Psychological Science
S2.The theories of Psychology in 20th century
2.1. Psychoanalysis: Freud and Carl Jung
2.2. Behaviourism: Pavlov, Thorndike, Watson and Skinner
2.3. Cognitive-Developlemental model: Piaget and Vygotsky
2.4. Gestalt psychology: Wertheimer, Kohler and Koffka
2.5. Humanist theory: Carl Rogers
S3. Introduction to Epistemology of psychology
3.1. Bachelard and the new scientific spirit
3.2. Neo-positivism of Popper
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
1st unit - Syllabus contents focus on theoretical and methodological issues of the history of psychology, thus enabling the fulfillment of the following course objectives: Acquisition and integration of knowledge allowing the historical framing of psychology; Acquisition and development of skills of analysis, synthesis and integration of methods, techniques, concepts, models, theories and knowledge of the main specialities, domains and intervention contexts of psychology.
2nd Unit – Syllabus contents focus on the deepening of theories, concepts and practices of analysis of epistemology of psychology, thus enabling the fulfillment of the following course objectives: Acquisition and development of academic skills of gathering and organization of information, of selection of relevant bibliography, of critical and comprehensive reading and writing of scientific papers; Development of a critical and self-critical attitude and the systematic adoption of ethical and deontological values.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include lecture and tutorial lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references in the history and epistemology of psychology, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection.
A System of continuous assessment:
- 2 written tests, duration of 90 minutes each with a weighting of 40%, total weight of just 80%;
- pratical work, writing and respective presentation and discussion in class, focusing on a thematic inherent to the programmatic contents: weighting of 20%.
