Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
To integrate scientific knowledge and methodology of research abilities that guarantee autonomy in the conception, planning, execution and evaluation of empirical research projects in the domain of communication and information sciences. It is the purpose of this c.u. to ensure that candidates demonstrate an ability to systematically understand the broad area of Information Sciences, namely in the branch of Media Studies. They should also be able to master the competences and research methods required by this cycle of studies for this scientific area.
Syllabus:
1. Theoretical and methodological problems of research in the domain of communication and information sciences.
2. Strategies of bibliographical and web research.
3. Guide for the design of a research project.
4. Main strategies, methods and techniques of research.
5. Presentation of results in scientific research.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
With the aim that the student will be able to integrate the scientific knowledge and the abilities of research methodology that guarantee autonomy in conceiving, planning, executing and evaluating an empirical research project, in the domain of communication and information sciences, the contents address theoretical and methodological problems of research in this domain, strategies of bibliographical and web research, the guide for the design of a research project, main strategies of research and the methods and techniques of qualitative and quantitative data collection and treatment, as well as the presentation and communication of results in scientific research. In this manner, we reinforce the ability to plan and undertake a research project that is valid, meaningful and original, which totally respects every requirement of academic integrity and contributes to the dissemination of scientific knowledge, by means of the national and international academic publications with ‘referee’.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The methodology adopted will be mainly expositive, demonstrative and by means of case studies, encouraging an active participation on the part of the students. The continuous assessment of this curricular unit will be focussed on the planning of the research project designed by each student (which should be presented both in writing and orally, in the classroom), as well as on their ability to expose basic concepts formed from the critical reading of the bibliography adopted.
For those students who did not conclude the c.u. in continuous assessment, the final exam is an option. The final written exam is worth 100% of the final mark. The minimum mark for admission to the oral exam is 7.5.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
For the development and consolidation of the research abilities, the c.u. follows a teaching methodology which includes research, reading and discussion of specific bibliography, as well as thematic debates and critical reflections on them, which totally matches the competences and abilities for autonomous research required at this cycle of studies.
