Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) To contribute to the knowledge of concepts and theories in the field of criminology and victimology using advanced evidence. (ii) To acquire, develop and deepen knowledge and skills to perform a right assessment of a specific problems of crime and violence and aplying this knowledge to real context; (iii) To develop interest in research and intervention in these areas thorught the use of relevant information; (v) To improve oral and written communication skills; (vi) To develop a critical attitude and self-criticism, as well as to adopt ethical values.
Syllabus:
Unit 1 Criminology (3 ECTS) Part I: Criminology: From criminal psychology to sociology of crime. The role of individual differences on crime and delinquency. The emergence of social factors on crime theories: subcultures, social learning and social control. Part II. The emergence of the victim on criminological theories. Symbolic interactionism. Labelling paradigm. Critical criminology. Unit 2 Victimology (3 ECTS) The concept and the status of victim; History of Victimology. Profiles of victimisation and theories of Victimology. The surveys of victimization and the black numbers of crime. The consequences of victimisation. General Guidance for intervention with victims. Current victimology. Typologies of victimization.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
UL 1 – The contents focus on comprehension and critical analysis of Criminology as a science. So, we pretend to achieve the proposed objectives and competencies, especially the understanding of the evolution of Criminology, familiarization with the specific terminology and the acquisition of a critical thinking. The contents are related to the different perspective in explaining crime to facilitate the development of a critical thinking as well as the ability to apply knowledge to real contexts and research. UL 2 – The contents emphasize theoretical knowledge and practical matters of Victimology, thus enabling to develop knowledge, skills and abilities for the study of the victim; Support the understanding of the main techniques and methodologies used in the assessment of victimization cases to support the resolution of the situations presented; to demonstrate autonomy and responsible conduct in the intervention with victims.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous and based on a written tests, as well as the execution of theoretical and practical tasks in the classroom.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
UL 1 - Discussion of the topics in order to allow students to learn how to develop a critical and mature analysis and theoretical argumentations. At unit we develop a practical exercises that allow the students to apply the learned contents to real contexts. UL 2 - Theoretical exposition of contents the performance area; Individual and group debate of cases illustrating different problems; Demonstrations; Practical exercises with the aim of demonstrating knowledge and skills in the assessment and / or intervention in cases of child, juvenile and adult victimization; to show autonomy and responsible conduct in practice.
