Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
Knowledge and ability to understand the theoretical texts of semiotics, discussing the meaning of the lexeme semiotics, making a historical and theoretical reflection on the field of knowledge in question and from the understanding of the general lines of the evolution of semiotic studies. Application of theoretical knowledge through its articulation with techniques of discourse analysis, understanding the interaction of semiotic codes in different texts. Constitution of Autonomous reasoning and justification, through directed research on prospects of semiotic studies Ability to collect, select and interpret relevant information about practices and semiotic discourse information pouring this collection in analytical readings from specific texts. Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions in terms of production of text critical or theoretical analysis.
Syllabus:
I. Historical and Theoretical Reflection on the field of knowledge
1. Outline of the evolution of semiotic studies
1.1. Saussurean dichotomies in general linguistics
1.2. The semiotics of CS Peirce
1.3. Hjelmslev and the stratification of the semiotic world
1.4. Myth as a semiological system: meaning, connotation and metalanguage.
1.4.1. Semiotic systems in the second degree: form, concept and significance.
1.4.2. Reading and deciphering myth.
II. Practice of semiotic reading.
1. Semiotics semiotics of reading and reading: Identification of semiotic codes and their structure through the practice of semiotic reading.
2. Semiotic analysis of texts in Portuguese poetry and visual semiotic reading of contemporary mythic discourse.
3. Transmedia narratives
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The learning objectives of this course are consistent with the stated syllabus. To ensure the knowledge and ability to understand the theoretical texts of semiotics, discussing the meaning of the lexeme semiotics, making a historical and theoretical reflection on the field of knowledge in question and from the understanding of the general lines of the evolution of semiotic studies, the first point in the program focuses on a historical and theoretical reflection on the field of knowledge (evolution of semiotic studies). Regarding the Application of theoretical knowledge through its articulation with techniques of discourse analysis, understanding the interaction of semiotic codes in different texts, point two of the program, Practice semiotic reading, warrants and exercise methods of semiotic analysis allow the identification of semiotic codes, by reading selected texts.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
The theoretical unit (historical and theoretical reflection on the field of knowledge) consists of exhibitions by faculty, implying further theoretical work done and presented by the students and the level of comprehension and textual interpretation.
The second Module (Practice semiotic reading) is a theoretical and practical module that consists in the exercise of a semiotics of reading and practice of semiotic reading, implying the application of theoretical knowledge through its articulation with techniques of discourse analysis, as well as with autonomous forms of research in the collection and selection of relevant semiotic practices and discourses.
This course is assessed by: Theoretical test (40%), presentation on contemporary myth (10%), paper on transmedial narratives (30%), presentation and justification of the paper (10%), participation in the dynamized activities ( 10%)
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
The theoretical test is designed to ensure that the student has read and understood the texts studied in lectures. The article aims to assess whether the student knows how to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions in terms of production of critical text or theoretical analysis, applying the methods of analysis and semiotic reading. Oral presentations aim to ensure that the contents taught are discussed and defended in public.
