Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
In this curricular unit, the competences to be acquired are the following: 1- To understand and contextualise the notion of 'editorial'; 2 - To understand and contextualise the notion of 'opinion article'; 3 - To clearly distinguish an 'editorial' from an 'opinion article'; 4 - To understand the notions od post-truth, manipulation and lie; 5 - To understand, contextualise and discuss the topic of freedom of speech. As to the learning outcomes, the students are expected to: 1 - In a strict sense, to identify, within the journalistic context, the characteristics of an editorial and an opinion article; 2 - In a general sense, to display a high level of intellectual maturity, so as to reinforce their civic personality and future professional abilities.
Syllabus:
Public opinion. Post-truth, manipulation and lie. Freedom of speech. Freedom of speech and democracy. The crisis of evidence. Editorial and opinion article. Context and differences.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
The contents of this curricular unit, which are closely connected with its designation, provide the theoretical and practical background for achieving the desired objectives. Through the analysis and discussion of two fundamental landmarks of journalism - the editorial and the opinion article – we shall seek to answer the conceptual aspects included in the learning objectives and to civic intervention dimension underlying this curricular unit.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Continuous assessment: test, individual oral presentation, with subsequent discussion in the classroom. Participation in the classroom.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
Carrying out work on a continuous and regular basis, as explained above, implies a direct and up-to-date contact with editorial samples and opinion articles of both national and foreign leading newspapers. The two main objectives if this curricular unit are thus achieved: to provide a theoretical basis, as well as a practical and civic experience.
