Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) To give students knowledge of the main types of scientific information sources vs journalistic sources;
(ii) To distinguish, characterizing the sources of scientific information and the sources of journalistic information;
(iii) To develop literature search strategies and skills for the preparation of bibliographies in various media, especially in bibliographies of studies and databases;
(iv) Increase selection habits, organization and presentation of documents according to the technical and national and international standards themselves of Information Science.
Syllabus:
Part I - Documents and Sources of Scientific Information
1. Concept of information and sources of information
2. Evolution of documents and information sources
3. Types of sources of scientific information (specificities)
3.1. Primary, secondary and tertiary
3.2. Quick reference materials: Dictionaries, encyclopedias, guides, directories, internet.
3.3. Other reference materials: biographical sources, newspapers, television, libraries, archives, museums.
4. Evaluation of internet sources
5. Reference services
6. Bibliography as an instrument of knowledge
7. Bibliographic reference databases
8. Methodology for the preparation of scientific papers
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
It is intended that the students understand the relative value of different types of information and know how to use the bibliographic information services, either textual in nature, whether of non-text character, intended for use in the preparation of scientific papers and others. The UC distinguishes the characteristics of scientific information sources of journalistic information sources and their usefulness.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Theoretical and Pratical classes.
One written test (60%). A research work on a subject of communication sciences (40%). Class participation and attendance are considered as weighting factors in the student's final assessment.
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
It is a course of theoretical and practical nature, lectures, complemented with practical work by the students. The tests remain the most important tool for assessment of knowledge and skills of students when they are concerned or of theoretical content and the ability of analysis and interpretation of sources.
