Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
It is expected that the students achieve the following objectives:
- To present a deepen knowledge on psychosocial intervention in crisis and disaster;
- To acquire practical skills that enable the student to give first aid psychological support;
- To present a deepen knowledge of the main causes and risk factors for morbidity and mortality;
- To be able to recognize the importance of adopting an ecological perspective on health;
- To be able to recognize the importance of empowerment of citizens and communities in health promotion, prevention and treatment of diseases
- To develop (self) critical reflection skills that allow a knowledge application adjusted to the different contexts of health intervention in the field of humanitarian action.
Syllabus:
1. Intervention in crises and disaster situations
1.1. Stress, crisis, trauma, disaster and catastrophe
1.2 Victims and workers / volunteers in crisis intervention
1.3 Psychosocial impact of adverse situations
1.3.1 Psychosocial impact in special populations - Children and adolescents, elderly population, people with physical and/or mental disability, migrant / refugee population, professionals involved in rescue
1.4 Posttraumatic growth
1.5 Psychological first aid
1.6 Bad news communication and the process of identification and recovery of corpses
2. Health and Diseases
2.1 Public health and humanitarian intervention
2.2 Ecological approaches and empowerment in health and diseases
2.2.1 The involvement of citizens and communities in planning and implementation of disease prevention / treatment and health promotion programs
2.2.2 Awareness raising, mobilization, empowerment and advocacy in the planning and implementation of programs
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
- To deepen the knowledge on psychosocial intervention in crisis and disaster: Point 1
- To deepen the knowledge on the main causes and risk factors for morbidity and mortality: Point 2
- To be able to recognize the importance of adopting an ecological perspective on health: Point 2
- To be able to recognize the importance of empowerment of citizens and communities in health promotion, prevention and treatment of diseases: Point 2
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Explanatory and active/participatory methodologies are adopted, with exploration conducted by students after the visualization of videos about programs in health and diseases fields, and promotion of critical and reflexive debates in the classroom.
The assessment adopted is continuous, consisting of specific practices (worth 50% of final grade) - work that is systematized into a final report -, and an oral exam for (worth 50% of final grade).
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes:
- To deepen the knowledge on psychosocial intervention in crisis and catastrophe: adoption of expositive and active / participatory methodologies, with exploration carried out by students through simulation / role playing. - To deepen the knowledge on the main causes and risk factors for morbidity and mortality: adoption of expositive and active / participatory methodologies, with exploration carried out by students through the promotion of critical and reflective debates. - To recognize the importance of adopting an ecological perspective on health: adoption of expositive and active / participatory methodologies, with exploration carried out by students through videos visualization and reports on humanitarian intervention programs in health and disease and promotion of critical and reflective debates. - To recognize the importance of empowerment of citizens and communities in health promotion, prevention and treatment of diseases; adoption of expositive and active / participatory methodologies, with exploration carried out by students through videos visualization and reports of humanitarian intervention programs in health and disease: promotion of critical and reflective debates.
