Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit:
(i) Acquire the theoretical and methodological bases of work/research in anthropology and sociology of health. Main sociological, anthropological theories and research methods;
(ii) Acquire and develop knowledge and skills that allow discussing and evaluating a new paradigm in the analysis of health and illness both in sanitary spaces as social communities. Developed capacities to work within the bio - socio - behavioral - cultural and ecological paradigm.
(iii) Being able to understand bodily reality beyond its physical components, including its symbolic and transcultural dimension
(iv) Develop a critical capability in relation to health policies, discerning their ideological and cultural bases, for the construction of a more just society: see how these policies can be applied to physical therapy workspaces;
(vi) Develop a critical attitude and self-criticism as well as adopt ethical and deontological values at work, with the methodology and anthropological perspective.
Syllabus:
1. Anthropology, Sociology and Health. 1.1. Research, concepts and methodologies.1.3. Historical perspective. 1.3.1. The biomedical model; the sociomedical model; Ecology and Health
2. An anthropology and sociology of the body. 2.1. Naturalistic perspective, constructivist perspective, phenomenological perspective. 2.2. The body and the emotions; the pain and the suffering.
3. The social experience of the disease. 3.2. lifestyles and habitus incorporated. 3.3. deteriorated identity and stigma. 3.4. The chronic disease. 3.5 The narration of the disease
4. Health policies; 4.1. The theoretical perspectives, the structuralist; Marxist perspective; new right. 4.2. New health technologies. 4.2. Health and disease, space of citizenship. 4.2.1. Health and social justice. 4.2.2. The literacy of health.
5. The institutional organization of health. 5.1. The hospital institution. 5.3. The context of physical therapy in contemporary society: institutions, agents and access to therapy.
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives:
1. Syllabus contents focus on specific theoretical subjects in the field of anthropology and sociology of health. These lectures enable students to acquire the basic concepts and the field of work, and that allows them to address other disciplinary fields of health subject.
2. Develops the major themes that deal with the relationship between the body, disease, medical and laboratory practice, and the social, cultural and emotional expressions.
3. Syllabus covered in this part is the base of main problems and challenges facing the contemporary society in its relation with health in medical institutions. Particular attention has been in social structures influence.
4. Syllabus will give a particular attention to the social and cultural theories that inform health systems and social policies of access to health.
5. This unit helps students to have a critical analysis on the institutional organization of health, since the hospital structures to professions, which act in the health field.
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation):
Teaching methodology will include theoretical lecturing, research, reading and discussion of specific references, as well as thematic debating and critical reflection. Assessment will be continuous, based on the accomplishment of a written evaluation test (50%), the execution of an Analysis Paper to a Scientific Paper (30%), classroom discussion (10%), as well as punctuality and student attendance (10%).
