Learning Outcomes of the Curricular Unit: | |||
Provide students with the knowledge and ability to understand the components of the human movement integrating the knowledge of neuroanatomy, biomechanics and neurophysiology and applying them in the evaluation and treatment of neurological (adults and pediatrics) conditions. The student at the end should be able to assess, identify and execute the different methods / techniques / approaches of physiotherapy and apply them in the context and clinical cases of neurological and pediatrics conditions. The student should know the indications and contraindications of each method/ technique / approach and formulate an appropriate clinical reasoning in order to assess and treat patients. | |||
Syllabus: | |||
Theoretical-practical: Functional Division of the Nervous System; Somatosensory system, Vision and Balance; Structures of NS and relevance; CPG's; Reorganization after CNS injury and consequences; Neuroplasticity. Practice: I.Intervention in Adults with Neurological Disorders: Methods / strategies for assessment and intervention in patients with tone changes; Bobath concept (principles and facilitation of movement sequences); Other therapeutic approaches: Carr & Shepherd, CIMT, Brunnstrom, Perfetti, Margaret Johnstone, Rood. II.Intervention in Children with Cerebral Palsy and other conditions: Methods and techniques and evaluation, concept of treating Neurodevelopment - Bobath .III Therapeutic Riding. | |||
Demonstration of the Syllabus Coherence with the Curricular Unit's Objectives: | |||
Theoretical-practical: The deepening of theoretical and practical concepts enables students to understand the scientific reasoning that based therapeutic intervention in neurological (adults and pediatric patients). Practice: The practice of assessment methods / procedures of the contents of intervention in adults with neurological disorders, Intervention in Children with Cerebral Palsy and other conditions and Therapeutic Riding allows students to develop practical technical skills and different intervention strategies. Knowledge of the indications and contraindications of these approaches allows students to develop the ability to formulate an appropriate clinical reasoning and perform, in a real clinical context, the best practices in neurological patient. | |||
Teaching Methodologies (Including Evaluation): | |||
The final score is calculated taking into account the 70% of the final practical and 30% of the final theoretical-practical component. Theoretical-practical: Includes expository lessons and/or discussion of proposed topics. The assessment is comprised of two written exams (50% + 50%) where theoretical-practical assumptions and scientific reasoning that based the intervention of physiotherapist in adults with neurological disorders, intervention in children with cerebral palsy and other conditions and in Therapeutic Riding are evaluated. Practical: Includes demonstrative lessons and repeated practice of the assessment and physiotherapy treatment techniques used in intervention in adults with neurological disorders, Intervention in Children with Cerebral Palsy and other conditions and Therapeutic Riding. The assessment is comprised of two practical tests (50% + 50%) with clinical cases framed in the different contexts. | |||
Demonstration of the Coherence between the Teaching Methodologies and the Learning Outcomes: | |||
Theoretical-practical: The expository and / or discussion of themes in the classroom allow the acquisition/ deepening by the student of theoretical-practical knowledge assumptions and scientific reasoning that based the intervention in adults with neurological disorders, intervention in children with Cerebral Palsy and other conditions and in Therapeutic Riding. The discussion of topics on the practical-theoretical assumptions and scientific basis underlying the different interventions also allows students to develop the capacity for critical analysis on best clinical practices to take into neurological and pediatric patients and to enhance the study of the contents discussed. Practical: The demonstrative and interactive format of classes, allowing repeated practice and targeted knowledge of the assessment, planning and execution methods and techniques used in intervention in adults with neurological disorders, intervention in children with cerebral palsy and other disorders and therapeutic riding allows students to develop manuals and clinical reasoning essential to future clinical practice skills in a real context. | |||
